NYS Coyote Hunters

Hey guys,Better late than never I suppose.I used to predator hunt a lot back in the late 80's through the mid 90's.Business & marriage took a toll on free time though and it kind of fell by the wayside.Back in that time though,we'd average 5 or 6 a season calling and that many more with traps. On a good note though,I've got the work thing under control,a bad marriage breakup finished, and a 21 year old son that's become absolutely rabid about predator hunting,so things are looking up for this season, lol. We did manage to eek out 2 yotes and a half dozen fox last season,so I'm hoping that' a good sign I havn't forgotten all the important stuff, lol. We hunt mostly southern herkimer, otsego & madison counties.

Perri,
I had a big ol' male coyote giving us heck while we put up treestands on Saturday...barking & howling in short sequence. The weird thing is that is was 3:00pm! He sounded off just like he just busted me during a hunt, but in a real low tone...very cool and erie!
The farmer down the road saw another coyote in his fresh cut corn field 2 miles away on Friday too.
And there is a fresh deer trail stomped down through the ferns 18yds in front of one of my honeyhole bow stands....
All good news!!!

There are some big bears around that part of NY. I talked to a gentleman from the Ski Patrol at Hunter Mt. on a lift ride up last year & he said they have to sometimes close down a run or two late in the ski season (March-April) due to bear traffic across the slope!

Did you catch 'em on your trip?
Not many guys went offshore this weekend. A 51' boat from Indian River DE sunk and crew of seven spent a day and a half in their life raft 70 miles out before being rescued today. We were slip neighbors with these fellas a few years back down in NJ. Glad to report that they are all safe! Rescued by the USCG!

Well the fishing went okay. Had a fun time with the stripers and blues. My father caught a blue that must have been pushing 15 pounds. What a fight. The ground fishing was so so. We caught a bunch of black seabass but the short to keeper ratio was like 5 -6 to 1. Still we got quite few for the freezer. And seabass makes super sashimi!!!

Nice bass!
I'm guessin' 29-32lbs?

Guys,
Just a reminder for anyone hunting in NY....
Make sure you have a furbearer possession tag for those bobcats!
You can print one out right from this site: fur bearer tags
I wrote down all of the Regional Office phone #s on the back for easy reference to get the pelt sealed.

the time is drawing near!!!

Yep....nice they waived tagging the coyotes.....always thought that was a pain....

NYDEC is starting to come around to the "real world of hunting" I think. They had test programs allowing rifle use for deer in a couple counties below us.
I guess it went okay, and I'm hoping they adopt it up here.

Many of the handgun hunter's in the regular counties are carrying rounds that are pretty much equal to many rifle rounds, so there isn't much difference.
But, that being said, I realize that they are looking at the "number" of hunters overall that would carry a rifle, instead of the few handgun hunters.
Most carry a slug gun......finally developed an amazingly accurate slug load for the rifled barrel guns.....and sad to say, I don't even hunt with one..

Just another handloading challenge I guess.....lol

Ditto knockem'........soon, very soon...hehehe

Take care,
Bob

Good guess Fred but you're a little generous. Thanks anyway.

Appreciate the reminder about the bobcat seals. Seeing how I'm going to shoot a bunch of them this year the guys at DEC will know me by first name. It's okay to dream, isn't it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sunday AFTER sunrise we can begin right? (Sunrise: 6:56am for me) Yesterday I was up at a farm I hadn't been to in about ... 15 years. Spoke to the Mrs. and she said the coyotes have been disturbing her sleep and I was welcome to shoot them all! I kind of chuckled and told her I'd do my best to get at least one of them. Then the old farmer came out. While we were there, we spotted something in the overgrown hay meadow about 300 yards across from their driveway. Yip, a big light colored coyote. Strange thing is he must have been there a good 10 minutes before we saw him. Then he loped off. Must have been mousing. The old guy says he sees them all the time and it should be EASY to shoot those things. Yeah right!! Man you talk about the pressure being on. I just hope I'm not jinxing myself by seeing a lot of game this summer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

What types of calls are you guys going to start the early season with?

Perri

Bob,
I usually hunt deer in shotgun-ville too & have been using my TC Encore .50 muzzleloader almost exclusively. That baby can knock'em down to 200 for sure.
Wouldn't you know it the one day last season I grabbed my old 870 smooth bore with irons, I jumped a real nice racked buck out about 160 yds..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

knockem'

yep........Murphy's Law......

It happens alot when you switch from hunting with a long gun to a handgun the first few times.

I call it the "security blanket syndrome".

Everyone wants to bail and go back to the long gun, but I tell them to stay put and keep at it. Once they nail their first buck, and get use to changing their hunting style a little, things start coming up roses.

It's alot like a cross between bowhunting and hunting with a long gun.....somewhere in the middle it seems.
Just gotta stick with it.......

But I understand the difference regarding a smoothbore....I'm with you....I'd opt for the smokepole instead anyday..........

Oh...yeah, speaking of ML's, I've got the TC Omega 50 cal. that I use during late season....love to smack a coyote with that.....hehehe.

can't wait for the 1st....lol

Bob

I gotta read the book on start time for Oct 1. Was kind of hoping it was 12:01am on Sunday!!! We might be going up to the farm this weekend with the ocean forecast being another lousy one. If its OK for midnite, then I'll pushing on my forward assist at +1 minute...
My buddy had 27 large-type yellowfin & 3 swords in the Toms Wed-Thurs...hand feeding them behind the boat. Fish were 70-100+lbs and action was nonstop! He will feel that for a few days yet! Coyote hunting on opening day (even in the rain) ain't a bad backup plan though...

Perri,
Great news about the sighting! I got your back with my .25-06 if need be...it is good to go for 500...
Sniping one to help a local farmer out is SURELY the right thing to do!!!

Fred,

Hate to be a wet rag but I think it's after sunrise on Sunday. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif(dang DEC) But maybe where you're hunting the sun rises a little early. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I plan to be out there myself. Got to meet domestic and work obligations Saturday but come Sunday AM I'll be in the brush. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Man, sounds like your buddy had a SUPER trip. Those are some very nice yellowfins. Wouldn't I wouldn't give for a trip like that. And 3 swords!! They hit the jackpot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Nice to see another 25-06 fan. I've got two that I really like. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Good luck to all you NY coyote hunters this weekend. Put a hurtin on em and be safe.

Thought I would show you guys where I hope to be hunting in the morning.

Starting here:

Walking to this area:

Finishing on this ridge:

In between these areas are a couple more potential stand locations. I figure this will make for a good morning hunt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

callemin,

Welcome to the forum......

Good place to ask that question. I'm sure one of the guys on this thread are close by.

I'm way over on the other end of you...but it's all good.

Being anywhere near the Catskills sounds like a productive option from what I've read here.

Take care,
Bob

Welcome Callemin.

Dutchess county should have one or two running around.

Well guys, I punked out today and missed a 125 yard chip shot./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

He came to wounded pup distress cries. Going back out in a few. Hopefully I won't screw up again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

jb,

I'm located about 1 1/2hrs. or so northeast of you. Following routes to get an idea of my location, if you were to go north of Bradford towards Olean and catch Rt# 16 north to Rt# 39, you'd head east from there. I'm about 14 miles from that point.
I'm located a mile from where Rt# 39 and Rt# 19 intersect, just north of the Village of Pike, NY.
Taking Rt.# 17/86 to Rt# 19 and heading north is another way.

Nice and rural...just the way I like it. Many thousands of acres to hunt & soooo little time.

You're in a great location....right on the doorstep of Allegheny State Forest.

Oh yeah.....welcome to the forum..........

Perri.......nice!
Early season can make up for the slower, later part....hehehe. You must'a been a little PO'ed....but fret not, things are just getting started.
Hopefully the one you took a poke at is a slow learner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Take care,
Bob

Bob,

You got that right. I shot and waited for him to drop. He just loped off. Funny, as he loped off he was looking around like "where did that come from?" And I was saying where did that shot go???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Went out again in the evening and got rained out. But it was the lightning that really got my attention. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Really can't complain though. Saw a lot of game yesterday. Fox, coyote, deer, turkeys and a SKUNK. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hopefully I'll keep seeing game and be able to put it all together sooner than later.

Perri

Sounds REAL promising Perri......

Things are looking real good for one of those "banner years" in your neck of the woods.....

Keep gettin' out there....

I gotta wait for payday to get my new license....damn it. Fuel oil sucked up my stash o' cash for this week. I was gonna let it go for awhile longer, but the wife brought it up and had already checked the guage on the tank....sh*t! No squirming my way outta that one.

Why is it that women are always cold ?????????

Take care,
Bob

Hey guys!
Tough luck, Perri...we'll give you credit for 1 coyote release for your yearly totals /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I had an eventful afternoon hunt for opening day too!
I didn't bring a spotlight with me to the stand so I got out of there when visibility ran out.
While easing back out the 1/4 mile or so to the 4 wheeler, a coyote howled from right about at my stand location! I double timed it to the bike remembering I have a small spotlight in my atv bag. Met my buddies that had been fishing nearby at the bike and got one of them on the light....& let out some pup distress on the open reed...

the whole woods exploded across the meadow with yips & howls!!!
just couldn't one to show itself to get the light on one for a shot.

Very exciting close call though...

anybody else have action???

Tried again yesterday evening. Beautiful day to be out hunting. Nothing to show for my efforts though.

Going to try and get in some early morning hunts.

Bob,

I feel your pain. But then again, how many new guns did you get this summer. LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Fred,

We have to team up on these guys. Two heads are better (or should be)than one.
