I too am in Steuben County what town do you live in? I have a red coyote mounted looks real similar to the one in the pic, Female. give me a shout

I aslo live in Steuben county near Corning. With bow season opening tomorrow does that mean we can only use a shotgun or a rimfire or does that only apply during shotgun season. I've never really paid attention to that rule because I've always hunted them after deer season was over.

Hey all. I live around Arkport. There was another fellow on here last season from Canisteo as well...but he hasn't been around in awhile and hasn't responded to my PMs, so I'm not sure if he's coming back. I'll try finding him at work once deer season ends.

I am going to make a phone call on Monday and check with DEC on the rimfire issue. I hunt a great deal in Allegany County, where it is legal to hunt deer with a rifle...the reg book says you cant use a centerfire rifle in a shotgun only area for yotes....So I'm starting to think that we could rifle hunt in the areas that were opened up to rifle deer hunting last year. (next year will likely see Steuben County legal for rifle as well....we'll see.) Otherwise, I'm going to spend a little range time with my conteder in .221

Where around corning do you hunt nyskt, and where are you bubbak?

The restriction in NYS regarding rifle's... is that during any open season for deer (i.e., archery, muzzleloader, etc.) where the restriction is for shotgun only... you are restricted to rimfire cartridges only. This stinks as we only have six months to hunt predators and the deer season is ~3 months. During this time I carry my 22 Mag rifle.

The recent counties (Allegany, catt., etc.) where it recently opened for rifle use during deer season you should be able to use any rifle.

WNY,

You're about 35 minutes from me....(didn't know you were in Arkport).
I'm down there quite often at Shultiess' (sp) Gun Shop, or over at John Jamison's (Arkport Harley).

The rimfire issue, as it had been in the past, was that you could'nt "be afield" with anything other than a rimfire (or shotgun w/various sizes of shot, or slug, if slug season was on) during deer season. I believe that this encompassed both bow & gun both......I'm almost positive (getting old CRS)

I could understand it during regular gun season, maybe, but during bow (and early coyote & fox) it sucked.

Welcome bubbak45, and nyskt100..............

sullivt....you posted before I did, but thanks....It's always been that way up here, and yes, it does stink, but we all gotta deal with it. I was hoping something changed that I didn't know about.....(Murphy's Law)....Nope. Maybe we'll get lucky here in Wyoming Co. and they'll incoporate us into the rifle use county thingie. Dennis and I are chomping at the bit over that one. He wants to use his .45-70 Browning High Wall....wow.

Take care,
Bob

Thanks guy's. I wasn't sure because the way they word it isn't too clear. Part of the reason I like to hunt coyotes and foxes is the chance to hunt with a rifle. Hopefully we won't have to worry about it next year!

Hi Guys,

Went out a few times this past week. No luck with coyotes but saw 4 good bucks!! One was a bruiser 8 pointer. The smallest was a 16 inch wide 6pt. The other 2 were respectable 8's!! Haven't seen that many shootable deer in this area in quite some years. Honestly though, I haven't seriously gun hunted for deer in a number of years. And with the bow I hunt the 2 two weeks before gun season and the late season bow.

Haven't heard many coyotes yet. Tonight was different though. Had 2 groups howling and barking at the coyote pup distress. Unfortunately they were on other ridges.

Well good luck to all you guys out there trying to harvest some venison. I may go out a little early this year. In the meantime, I got coyote fever bad. And there's only one way to cure it...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Gotta kil one of those deer and leave a nice gutpile to hunt coyotes over........hehehehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

So I get out there Sunday morning, had to suit up so to say, as it was a bit cold and windy. Set up near the top of a pasture cornering the woods. Squeaked one into the feild, however 3 curious cows also decided to browse the corner. That's a heart sinker - I thought you gotta be kidding me. It presented itself 3 times but had to let it walk because of the livestock.

Bubba,

Yup, I got it, but haven't had too much time to get on here lately.

Bob, What is your take on the reg issue in the areas that were opened to rifle last year?\

I passed two smaller bucks Saturday afternoon...I'm back out again tomorrow morning.

I'll try to log on soon and respond appropriately to all. And I may drop in and see you in the imminent future Bubba.

WNY,

I haven't looked at this years reg's that closely, but from what I remember from last years rules, you could carry just about anything "rifle".
To be honest, I'm not even sure they extended it to this season. I assume so, but not sure.
Northern Allegheny Co. is only 2 miles from my house, and both Dennis and I have talked about heading south for some rifle time, we just never got to it. Most of our permits were for 9H last year, so it kept us up into our county mostly.

I'll drag out my book, and maybe give DEC a call today and see what the deal is. I'm building another .357 Max barrel for my Encore (love that round), and it'd be a nice one to take along.

WNY,

Yep, checked the DEC website and in Allegheny and Catt. Co's you can carry any rifle during regular gun season. They still have it marked for this year, so it's a go I guess.
Maybe I'll head down there this year and remember what it's like to shoot one with a rifle. Being raised in the northern tier most of my life, it's been a good long while since I did so. God, since 1980-81 maybe. Back then I still used to hunt the southern tier a lot with my dad. Mostly Watkins Glen, Ovid, and Redding Center areas.
The deer population up north back then was pretty thin, so we headed south quite regularly.

I guess things have changed alot up north since then. The guy who supplies me with tires told me today that he's been having coyotes following him back into the bush very regularly when he goes up to the Adirondack's every month. He goes way back in off a roadway up near Eagle Bay and Inlet areas.
Said he had three or four following him and his girlfriend last time they hiked in.
He won't carry a gun either.......he's a naturalist nut!........(and a Dummy!)

They lost a wildlife photographer back in there this spring. They hiked right into the same area he was camping at. They don't know what happened to him, and only found his campsite. No sign of him or his backpack, etc.
Probably a Mtn. Lion, but could've been wolves.....and "remotely" a good sized pack of coyotes maybe ? Wolves & Mtn. Lions were recently (last few years)re-introduced, so who knows.

Take care,
Bob

Hello, was wondering if there was anybody here from Tioga CO. Or Eastern Chemung who knew of any good spots for yotes/fox?? I live above Barton and so much of this area is private land. Thank ya much, Mark.

WNY- happy to see you stop by to visit at my place and again congrats on that double, that is something I will probably never do. We will get together sometime and talk when you and I have more time, this time of year in my business ( seasonal )Ie. heating. I am very busy bout as busy as an ER. Dr. right after a five car pileup at the edge of town. ya know what I mean. will talk soon, Bubba

sureshot,

Stick around here......somebody from your neck of the woods will show up.
You're in a good location for them.....

Goin' out with my bow this morning for deer.

First time out this year, and I hadn't even drawn my bow yet this season. I was too busy getting my son's bow's in order, as well as loading and gun work. My bow's in good working order, but that doesn't mean I am.

Seems to be getting worse every year......I use to start practicing a month or two ahead of time. Then it dropped to weeks, then days, and now ????
Mainly, those shots that you have to hold for a short time, are the one's you need to practice for. They can test your meddle.

I don't know, last year I had one shot on a nice buck that strolled right under my stand. Shot straight down on him and the arrow sliced through him exactly to the right of his spine where I intended. Popped out of his chest, ran 30yds, and dropped. I've been shooting my sons' bow's, so I'm in shape there okay I guess, but who know's ?

I like to stay in tune for those fox & coyotes that will stroll through now & then, so I'm guilty there I guess. Last coy-mix I shot back in the mid 90's was 21 yds. Quick death for him. A quick yip, a short run, and he was down.

Love to be able to get that opportunity again.

Take care,
Bob
