Baiting

Bait, those two coyotes were at the pond on the opposite side of the farm, but not all that far from the bait. Then the next day one was in the cabin field and maybe 75-80 yards of the bait. This was on Dec 21 and 22. Haven’t seen them since. Things have been strange this year, with coyotes nearby but not hitting the bait. Not sure what to make of it.

Spot, congrats on the coyotes. Good you are having some action. The 20p continues to tug at me.
What is a 20p?

Good job Spot, congrats on another one!!

06, I hear ya. I'm betting it's the warmer weather, the coyotes are not stressed or hungry. I'm seeing the same thing. Coyotes in my valley constantly, but just don't visit my buffet.

I'm seeing the same thing here, intermittent visits. Guessing family groups are not traveling as much. I hear groups LATE at night, still have not heard the sunset rally talk. I believe that means they are bedding down close together, as the ground is mostly free of snow. I do see mice out in fields with the thermal at night, the coyote could be utilizing them more than usual.

I found another potential setup. Friends gave me the leftovers from butchering 2 does, put it out today. Blind is about 125 yards away. Before placing the bait/blind I was invited into the farm house. The wife told me about seeing a much bigger than a coyote walking the driveway early in the morning. They are convinced it was a wolf. Going to place a camera there tomorrow/day after. There shouldn't be any in this area, but who knows. The libs in state gov probably releasing problem wolves all around the state.

Last night as I arrived at the blind I saw a coyote bedded down about 250 yards away, it got up and went into the small woodlot about 20 minutes after I entered the blind. I sat in the blind from 10:30 pm, until 5:15 am. One coyote came to the bait about 4:50 am. I waited until the coyote was broadside, and took a shot. Unfortunately, due to being bored I had been messing with the reticle styles and choose one with multiple vertical dots. I think I didn't use the top one and didn't notice because a humility change had lighten up the contrast. A trip to the range confirmed the original reticle floating dot/crosshair zero was unchanged. No snow, mowed grass and dirt showed no blood. Just a few wooly/guard hair tuffs with just a bit of blood on the follicle end. Checked the brushpiles and grassy area in and around the trees, no blood or coyote. Did acquire 2 more road kill deer, they are out in new locations with cameras.

About 8:48 last night, a drive by the bait I put out in the afternoon. Back tonight at 8:32. 40 gr Berger from the 20p. 160 yards drt, no exit.

this one showed up 12 hrs after the one I shot last night. Day time appearance is rare here. This spot is a hot one, I will be in the blind early if the wind is good.

thought I should post sign that I watch for whether baiting, trapping or snaring or calling. Male coyote like to scent/scratch road edges especially field approaches. A little fresh snow and they show up better. No snow you need to know what to look for.

Congrats on another spot.
I have been gone a while, see where here

I was offline for a while. Something happened with my password during the site migration. I haven't been actively baiting much lately, but it's nice to see others who are being successful with it still. Since the activity slowed down at my place I've been traveling around and calling at night a bit more. I recently got access to a few properties near my house. I might share some posts in the night calling forum. Hopefully i'll get something to post here in the baiting forum soon too. I have several neighbor cats and a couple dogs around that like to clean out my bait, and if i put too much out it will attract ravens, crows, ospreys, hawks. So I usually don't put out much bait unless I notice coyote pics on my game cameras.

ok this one has shown up 3 mornings in a row, and I was in the blind this morning. From 6am to 9 the coyote had been in before 8 the previous 2 mornings. I stayed until 9, pic was 9:44!! Wind was wrong?

Way to stay after it Spot. Quiet here, as in zero coyotes. Big storm rolling in tonight and tomorrow, up to 12" inbound. So, hoping things will pick up, especially with single digit temps coming following the storm.

I have had 2 show while I was wuffing, I put out bait the night I got back but foxes ate it. Kept me up all night with the alarm. Reds and grays but not together. Several pairs or they came multiple times one.

I have two red fox and a possum that are regulars. They can be a real pest when I am trying to hunt. It’s been a month now since I killed those last two coyotes.

Talk about slow, I haven't had one on the bait pile since last June. I did see two cross the field about 2 months back, and heard some last week, but they have not hit the bait period. I even have a road kill deer out in a field ditch for 3 days now and still not a sign of a coyote. Red Fox and Possums are about all I see.

even with this visit time I still snuck into the blind before 7am because the previous 3 days of morning visits. I stayed until 10:15 am. Eagles, crows and starling. I believe the one in the daylight was the one that the farmer is worried about, walked down the driveway, plus he has a 12 year old Brittany he likes.
