Baiting

Started a bait Saturday, checked Monday there had been no activity. Went and looked at it this morning, about a 1/3 of the road killed button buck is gone. Going to sit tonight, how long? Maybe all night, got a 20 lb propane tank filled. Will sled the heater/tank, rifle and tripod in before sunset. Taking a beaver carcass with, probably stake everything in place. The setup is next to a cattail slough. So shot placement/coyote position will matter.

Here's the setup, deer blind near a guy's food plot. 90 yards to the bait. Added a staked down beaver to the menu. Have some water, heat and Chex mix. Ready to stay awhile, no cameras here.

This one has visited last years bait pile the last two nights. Nothing there but bones left from the Hammers deer in Nov. It must be hungry. If he comes tomorrow night, I will show y'all a video and a close up. I am going to try him with some scraps from the freezer.

Another one catches me a bit off guard. 8:15 this morning, the wife says,is that your beeper? Don't know, grab the binos, sure enough, coyote trying to chew on very frozen deer carcus. Of course the sun is shining right on the porch, I sneak out with my 22-250, conventional day time glass(no video), and she keys right up on me. Finally get on the bench and she wasn't having it. She started to vacate just as the shot broke, high back shot, dropped her. A little snow plowing into the creek bottom, maybe 10 yds, but DRT. 60 gr Vmax at 3650 helped me out big time. 130 yds.
Couple degrees below zero, cold, and hungry...maybe the action is going to pick up a bit.
Turns out, she was a tripod to boot, so, maybe did her a favor in this brutal cold spell were having...

Thanks Brs and welcome aboard! Stick around here and you will see some very cool setups and folks that can operate. Great group on this sight!

Welcome Brs. There’s some good people in this baiting forum.

Congrats, Bait. That coyote is almost exactly like one I got a few years ago. Only difference is mine was missing the other hind leg. Amazing how they can survive. Two years ago my trail camera got one at the bait that was missing a front leg, got video. The coyote had to kind-of jump to move so the one good front leg could move. Looked healthy, but makes me wonder how one could catch anything to eat with only one front leg. Maybe was just a scavenger. Haven’t seen it since.

Yep, life is hard for coyote. Probably why they average a short lifespan. Accidents, disease, predators (man included), never have seen starvation issues.

these two keep showing up,after I leave. Whether I sit evenings, or late to early morning. But I can't get a break with the wind direction. Any west wind they can get downwind, out of sight in the cattails. I just may snare them, I wanted to try some 40 gr Nosler bt, I loaded for the 20p. I moved the camera and pop-up blind and some bait to a field where I saw 2 on the way home last night. Going there will have wind in face there.

Congrats on the tripod spot, go get them others and keep the heater going but beware of carbon monoxide, lost a good friend and his wife at the same time to it. They were in the front of a horse trailer with sleeping quarters, had the heater going but a bad storm blew in with high winds, one of them shut the window and that sealer their fate.

a pair came in last night at the new spot. Shot this male. The other one looped around to the north of me. Howled for a couple minutes. I couldn't see that direction because I set the blind up by some large trees for a wind break. Don't think the coyote was more than 100 yds. The one I shot was about 50 yds.

Went to the bait at(7693 post) finally had a hard south(gusting over 20) wind. Got in the blind about 10pm. Wind started to lay down about 1:30am. I was dosing, at about 2 I looked with the Steiners, could see a coyote on the bait. Before I had a broadside shot the coyote headed into the brush(swamp), stopped about 30 yards away, that's when I saw the second one. Shorty they went back to the bait, the male pees and scratches a scent mark. Female stands by the bait. I shot her, she ran into the cattails. I hear her fall, thrash around. 10 minutes pass and I see a coyote in the woods(400 yards across the lake) I called female howls/barks for 15-20 seconds. Hoping he would return. 1.5 hrs later I called for the night (morning). Saw 2 on the way home. Thought about making a quick call setup for one, but I was tired. Retrieved the coyote this morning, boar raccoon had chewed on the bullet wound. Only happens when I drop one in tight cover.

Great job everyone who's had success as of late. Been a while for me but made contact last night behind the homestead. My shot was a little off to the right and he ran about 130 yards through the thick Gawgaa woods before giving it up.

My son in law decided to stop by while I was out hunting so when he arrived I got up thinking he wanted to shoot vs. spot for me. About the time I got up he said he wanted to spot and was moving a chair around. Of course, I looked up and there the yote stood looking right at us at 40 yards or so and I had to send the bullet quickly to keep him from bolting. Anyway, my bad not placing the shot right down the centerline but in the end I guess it worked out ok.
