Baiting

Ok, have to figure out how to add text after pics. I put out the first hayfield bait, road kill doe. 125 yards to the deer blind. New Tactacam reveal. On a ground mount, 15 yards. 21+ from this spot last 3 winters, as you can see El Nino winter here.

Yep, worried about eagles/crows since temps are not freezing carcasses solid. Crows I can deal with, doing damage so I can bust some. At least I will know when to "step in" with the new cameras.

I busted a crow this morning from the shack. Left him as a warning to others. The Grendel was akin to a missile strike - spectacular.

Two coyotes were on the other side of the farm night before last, then at least one came over on the cabin side, but didn’t go to the bait. Was within 75 yards but didn’t go. I hunted last night and was quiet all night. I am back at the shack right now, hoping.

Don’t know why coyote activity would slow up because of a crow, but maybe. I hung a crow on a stake one time to scare other crows away from the bait, and a coyote grabbed it off the stake.

Had a coyote on camera at 6:45 pm. Wife and I were watching Reacher episode, I called a halt and put on warm clothes and headed to the blind. Was raining when I got out of the truck. Stayed until 3:30 am, wind, rain almost the whole time. 2 showed up at 5:30 am, when I'm home. Back out there before sunset tonight, "forecast" less than 10% chance of precipitation. Hoping NOAA is correct tonight.

I had the first visitor at 5:40 , circled the bait. Hit my track where I had dragged the bait back into view of the camera. Coyote didn't like the human scent, started to leave. Made the mistake of turning broadside. First thermal kill with the 20p, trying the Berger 40 boattail varmint. Drt at about 150 yards. Waiting awhile for a second opp.

Last night I tried to sneak within shooting range of 2 coyote already on the bait. Had to wait a couple hours after they walked off. Twice the second one was downwind of the blind, close, no shot. First one back, another Berger 40 boattail from the 20p at 150 yards, drt.

Bait, those two coyotes were at the pond on the opposite side of the farm, but not all that far from the bait. Then the next day one was in the cabin field and maybe 75-80 yards of the bait. This was on Dec 21 and 22. Haven’t seen them since. Things have been strange this year, with coyotes nearby but not hitting the bait. Not sure what to make of it.

Spot, congrats on the coyotes. Good you are having some action. The 20p continues to tug at me.
