Predator hunter killed in Lunenburg County Va. Monday night

I'm not usually one to take a hard line without knowing the facts but this is never acceptable. I've been acquaintances with 3 people killed in hunting accidents. One was the teenage son of the man that used to shoe my horses, in a lay down goose blind' from a road hunter. The other two were deer hunting with one of those being shot by his brother.
I've experienced too many people, first hand, that don't have the proper respect for a firearm. I'm sorry, but not everyone should own a gun.
Definitely prayers for those involved. They're going to need them.

I have been hunting with thermal for over 12 years now and I will bet you that EVERY thermal hunter on this forum has been in a situation where they are looking at a thermal image and thinking "WTH is that?". That is why I emphasize to guys buying thermals to spend your money on a good scanner so that you don't have to aim your weapon at a target to ID it. It puts you in a situation where it is a lot easier to make a mistake.

I learned early on using thermal that the images can play tricks with your imagination and decided that if I could not tell 100% what I was aiming at it gets a pass. I never ever got in my truck to go home and regretted NOT shooting at a questionable target.

The bottom line is if you hold your crosshairs on a target and pull the trigger you make a conscious decision to kill whatever you are aiming at. Be sure and be safe.

That's one of the main reasons I am still using NV in 2025.

Does anyone know what distance was involved? Its hard for me to imagine that this was a "high end" thermal and it was within a reasonable distance. Perhaps if there was a very high amount of moisture in the air, but then you wouldn't shoot an unidentified blurry target. WTF.

This was my cousin who got shot and killed. We are waiting for results from investigation before making judgement….. but I was taught hunter safety when I was 12 and I am 65 now. Also make sure of your target and remember once the trigger is pulled there is no bringing the bullet back. Thank you and Safe Hunting!!!

I am sorry that you have lost a family member. You are right to wait on the results of the investigation. However, there is simply no excuse for something like this to ever happen. Just unacceptable. Prayers 🙏

The shooter was drinking and did not have permission to be hunting there! FACTS

Well... in Florida that would make it FELONY MURDER automatically.

Armed trespass is a Felony, I assume w/o permission he was trespassing... any death caused during the commission of a Felony is Felony Murder.

Prayers to the family.
