NYS Coyote Hunters

Erict,

I usually quit by 8:00 - 8:30 AM, as I, too, lose all confidence by then. All my daylight coyotes are shot between 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM

Why does everyone think you cant kill a dog mid day in NY? Some of my best calling has been around 11am. You just have to change your tactics as well locations. Dogs will be in thick stuff/swamps or a place where they can hunt or rest and feel safe. If they are hungry they will come.

Kzone it is sad seeing farms that I used to hunt be turned into developments/new homes...

I also have had great luck to about 11amish. Alot of mine have been shot around 9am. I think you would be putting alot more fur on the ground by stanying out at least 1 more hour.

family obligations don't allow it. I'm doing fine at night, like last night...

I've watched plenty of Randy Anderson videos that show daytime hunts work, but given the choice, I'd rather get up early and hunt from 4 AM-sunrise or 10 PM-2 AM instead of sunrise-11 AM at the places I hunt. I'm sure part of it for me is just the enjoyment of night hunting. I spend a lot of time in the woods during daylight hours during bow season and once I'm out of the first hour of daylight or last hour of daylight I usually blow a call like my Tweety every now and then. I have had very little luck even spotting something during those hours, so I'm just not convinced that the areas I hunt will produce yotes or fox very often during daylight.

BHW - nice fox - again! What caliber is your rifle? I think I'm in the market for a .17 Fireball soon.

my turn. last night just before dark. Pissed at myself though. The Vmax hit the spine and left a baseball size hole in the middle of the back. Do you stitch before stretching or after? I'd like to self tan this one and hang it in the man cave.

Stitch before stretching/drying, after fleshing. Be very careful when fleshing fox with holes, the hide is no where near as tough as coyoted. You can use a simple needle with dental floss or thread. Take your time - you may be tempted to go to longer stitches if it's a big hole, but you need to keep the stitches close together. If you use a straight needle you may find that a thimble or similar device will help you poke the needle through the hide. I've been meaning to get a circle needle from the fabric store for the next time I need to stitch.

Here's a great link with pictures: Stitching pelts

Well, I went out yesterday morning, Jan 1st, figuring all the other hunters and hikers might be in bed with hangovers. I got up late an made it to the parking spot at 7am. I get the guns out, everything packed up, car locked and I turn around and across the road at the edge of the field is a yote. I sit an glass it for a while, then as it meanders off decide to move on cause I don't have permission for that far. Doh!!!

First set produced nothing. Not many tracks out either. Second set was about 300yds northwest of the first. In a medium sized field. Put the Critter out about 30 yds and tucked myself under two small pines. Started calling about 8:30am. Gettin ready to pack up around 9am and the squirrels are making a ruckous. I look out at my 12 and 200yds out is a bobcat. Just sittin there lookin at the decoy. It made its way into the hedgerow on my right but never cam out. I waited 45 minutes. Pascked up, followed the tracks for a bit, and sure enogh the lil buggar had moved along the hedgerow to get a better view. Then just walked away.

So...first off, I only use hand calls. That's all I can afford. Secondly...I stopped calling around 8:45am and didn't call after that. Should I have. Would the bobcat have finished coming in??? Oh well, it was badass all the same.

LT - you did get up late, but you saw way more than me. I got up at 4, out to my spots by 5. Three stands and done by about 7:30. Went back out that night from 11-3AM with a pack in the distance that would respond to my calls, but wouldn't come any closer. Then the rain started and the light snow cover turned to fog. That was it.

I got him around 8:00 this morning. Believe it or not I howled him in. I wouldn't think he would be into socializing to much with his condition.. It was nice to put it out of its misery though. Yes shotgun 30yds
