NYS Coyote Hunters

Hope this serves for some inspiration -

Two weekends ago I was still trying to put some venison in the freezer, so I got out the muzzleloader for the final weekend. Weather conditions were perfect Saturday morning, with light breeze and overcast skies, so I got to the farm early to try some canine calling. Got set up about 5:45 AM and within 15 minutes in comes the grey. Took her at about 40 yards and over she goes. Not 10 minutes later, in comes the red. He came in across the same open field on almost the same trail. Was doing fine until he hit the grey carcass, then got a bit leery. He headed straight out to about 100 yards but turned when I lip squeaked. That was it for him. Tried my best for the trifecta, as there were song dogs calling in the distance, but no dice.

That red has the nicest fur I've ever seen on a fox. Long and silky smooth.

Called them in with my Foxpro FX3 and had the Jack-in-the-box in the open field - it really helped. I was using a Lightforce 140 mounted to my Leupold 6.5x20 VXIII on top of my Rem 700 VS in .223. Shooting 40 gr. V-Max at about 3,300 fps. I shot a grey and a red last year with great results, wish I could say the same for these two. Nothing a little needle and thread didn't fix after skinning and before putting them on the boards, but I think I'm going in the market for a .17 Fireball soon. Should be perfect for the places where fox or bobcats are a possiblity.

Good luck and be safe this season!

I never accused you of trespassing. I know there is another guy that hunt one of my farms and I thought it may be you. I simply asked if it was you that was it. I'll take a picture tomorrow and you'll see how close the photo's will look. Not really worth getting worked up like you are...

it came, with another, at 7:45 AM after 7 minutes of weepin woodpecker and 2 minutes or lucky bird.

Nice dog BHW!! That has some asome looking fur on it, it might even be worth a few $$$. I went out this morning and had new tracks all around me but no takers. I think I missed them by a few hours.

nice dog BHW...and some great looking territory!

I took a first time yote hunter out today and had a real good time. I set him up on the down wind of where I planned on calling and gave him the run down.."dont move, be prepared for anything, things can happen quick".. yadayadayada.

well, I left him and walked no more than 50yds to set up next to a big boulder. As I approached it I cut a real fresh set of yote tracks. I followed them around the boulder and not more than ten feet from me is a mangy ugly yote! we made eye contact for half a second and he took of like only a coyote can..I made it to a vantage point and barked to get him to slow up. he stopped for a second but I didn't have my darn red dot scope on and didn't get a shot off. the yote ran past my buddy and he got 5 shots off on it... He heard me barking and thought I started calling. less than a second later he saw the yote running towards him!! He thought I called it in at first ! He said "man you said it could be fast but I didn't think it would be this fast!, i didn't evan sit down yet!" we had a good laugh about it. He managed to get a peice of it too but we couldn't find it. hopefully it helps put it out of its misery.

Nice dog. Did you plan on calling that late in the morning? I've never had any luck with the after sunrise calling, and like many have probably given up because it seems to be so much more productive in the evenings or really early mornings.

All the snow we have out this way should be really compacted this week and make for some good hunting.

Congrats BHW...the terrain reminds me of the land around Mendon and Bloomfield area.

Been trying to call one up all week. Pretty new at this. Been listening to the podcasts and reading all I can. I think I will be trying some night action soon...waiting on my 250 to be delivered.

I am friends with Wallace who teaches in your district. He has taken me down to Lodi deer hunting at his parents land. If you get the chance to ask him about it I think it would be a good spot; if you ever get down that way. He does not coyote hunt and is too busy building his house if he wanted to.

One thing I have learned is you can't have too much land access. Working on getting permission from a big farm out in Scottsville area near the school I work at. Promising.

Good luck.
