NYS Coyote Hunters

I live in Springville NY... I did not have any luck until I started staying on the stand longer... 45 min to an hr... and ~5 minutes between sounds.

Anyone hunt the Franklin area in Delaware county? I have a place there. I was there on vacation this past week and ever night between 12a.m. and 1 a.m. they would group and yelp howl for about 15 minutes everynight right near my house. It was pretty cool. Gets the blood flowing for this coming season.

Hey maybe we can get some night hunting in. I know all those places you have mentioned. I believe all is within 30 minute drive from my place. I have to pass through Walton to get there actually.

This will be my first year I am hitting coyotes head on. I won't to start adding some notches to my belt.

Hey guys found this online about hunting NYC resevoirs property. You need the permits to hunt this property!!!!!
This is no good for you guys out west, but if you're coming this way to hunt, it's more territory we can try.

Gonna start the season off by smokin' a few squirrels....

We've been raising hell with the woodchuck population lately, and they're about ready to hit the sack for a few months, so diverting our attention to new quarry keeps things interesting.
Lately the red's (squirrels) out back have been giving the grey's hell, and evicting them out of the hardwoods. Hopefully were gonna change that somewhat.

Those red's are nasty little bastards......nice fodder for the old .22......lol

Take care,
Bob

Good luck Bob. Give em hell.

I used to love squirrel stew. That was with the greys. Do you have many "black" squirrels out there. We have couple here and there in pockets up this way. Just can't find them when I have a gun in my hands.

It's pouring cats and dogs here. Wind must be gusting to 25-30 mph.

Good day for net surfing.

Perri,

Yup....we have both flavors.....grey & black. The blacks are mainly located about 15 miles north of me, up near Warsaw, NY. Just a color phase, but they do look pretty neat.
They all seem to congregate in pockets I guess. Naturally, you can't hunt the village, but they do filter into the outskirts, so maybe I can get one for an action mount with a coyote. It'd be cool I'd think.
Never had squirrel stew though. From what I understand, it's pretty good. Based on my size, I think I've eaten everything else but......lol.

PS....weather's been crap all over lately. Rained all weekend, except for a short spell yesterday. Spent my time down in the shop reloading & casting slugs for deer season. I had my coyote hunting video's running all the time just to satisfy my pre-season jitters...hehehe.

Take care,
Bob

"I had my coyote hunting video's running all the time just to satisfy my pre-season jitters...hehehe."

I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one!!!

bhw,

Yeah, my huntin' video's keep me calmer, I guess. My wife calls them my "huntin' porno's" cause' I'm always down in the loading room watching them, and I don't want to be bothered....hehehe.
After watching the last batch she got me for Christmas last year, I really like those "Will" Primos video's. Those guys genuinely look like a lot of fun, and they also reminded me of the way me & my Retsof buddies were years back when we used to hunt together. What a ball we had back then.
It was over a period of a few years, and after some moved off, and changes within families, we kind of naturally split off on our own.
But, those Primo's video's really brought back memories. They were "for real" and they showed the goof's, misses, screw ups (falling on the creekbank-gun & all). The way hunting is in the real world.

I watched Bill Jordan's video's, as well as some Muzzy's shows, and those Primo's are the best. Mainly 'cause of Will's goofy laugh I guess. The Bill Jordan video's were good, but the Muzzy's were down right boring. Knight & Hale's were pretty good, but they do nothing but "hock their wares" with hunt's thrown in to be able to call it a "hunting video", I guess.

I saw where they advertised a "Primo's Predator Truth Video" in the packaging, so I gotta get out and get that one quick. NICE !
That's just gotta be funny as hell.
The only video's that made me laugh, half as much in the past, was the old Dan Fitzgerald video's...funny bastard!

"Fun & funny" is the icing on the cake when you hunt, and it'll cement memories for many years to come.

Well....that's my "Siskel & Ebert" on huntin' video's....lol.

Take care,
Bob

Fred,

I'm taking that you mean Byron South's "Coming to the Call, Vol. 5 " ?

I haven't seen #1 yet. I've heard of Byron, but never have seen one of his video's. Strange for the amount of video's I have & watch.
If I can't be doing it due to being "out of season", I gotta watch someone else hunting them.....morbid, I guess.

Realtree stuff is pretty good, but yeah, all monster bucks....not like the Primos videos where you can tell they're not necessarily killing scrub bucks, but usually scouting and taking the biggest one's available in that area.
My "father in law" calls it (Realtree's) "canned hunts", or "bootin' them out of a box"...hehehe.
After scouting your area, and getting to know what's available, you gotta make a decision on a buck (if it presents itself) and go with it, not regretting it later. That is unless your shooting yearlings.....boo.

I spent many years going "empty handed" at the end because I got too picky. You know, waiting for that big eight, or drop tine that never transpired. Then one year I took that average eight, and the big one showed up (bow season) when I was trying to fill my doe tag........sucks!

Oh, by the way, Byron's videos I've heard, are mostly shot in Texas and the surrounding states.....this true ?
I'd love to see some video's of it being done in our own backyard. One I remember seeing was "Hunting in the East" with Brent Saxton (from here somewhere). It was mainly an instructional video, but I guess the guys on here on PM really like it (and Brent is one of us too-lol).

Primo's has Randy Anderson doing their's, and I guess his video's are pretty good. Never seen one though. Gotta get outta my loading room more often.

Must be that aroma of a fresh opened can of powder.....LOL.......just like fresh coffee grounds......heeeeeeheeeee.

Take care,
Bob

Say,

I'm thinking of producing a video. Maybe I'm call it "*&^%#bleep bleep Coyote Hunting" or "How to almost shoot a coyote". All filmed right here in NY.

I like those Randy Anderson videos. Good stuff. If nothing else, it surely gets the blood flowing.

Acquired a new piece of property to hunt. The owner says the coytoes are all over. That's what they all tell me. Also got declined permission on another piece of property. It happens. Spoke to a guy, yesterday and he told me his friend shot something like 29 of them in this area??? Shoot, I don't see 29 in a whole year driving, hunting, etc. That's an awful lot for this part of the country, especially since he called them all in!

Knock-em, where's the tuna steaks? I watched some of the weights on-line. Looked like a blast. Some day......

Any thoughts on a get together??

Perri

Anybody coonhunt? Getting the dogs ready for hide season, and am looking for new areas to hunt in, so if anyone wants to run the dogs during the season, just pm me an we'll set up a weekend hunt.

Trapping season is also just around the corner, and with local fox populations busting loose, it looks to be a good season, I just hope it cools off quicker this year than it did last year.

It'd be great if we could all get together an do some hunting this year. Anybody interested? Let's set it up and do it, be a great way for everyone to meet each other.

Knock'emdown, Byron should give you commision you just sold me on 2 of his videos Volume 3 and 5. Im going to try and hunt more during the daytime this year so I figure I better learn how to call/hunt in the woods.
Freebm if you need any extra footage of how not to get a coyote let me know, I can film as much as you want.

Perri,

Yeah, making a video like that for us upstate NY'ers would be one funny production. Everyone could have their own segment of calling, and explain their favorite calls and all, then you could switch to another caller/hunter, but keep flashing back to the same guy just sitting there.......HAHAHAHA!
.....or sleeping, or taking a leak, whatever....

Either that, or we could pull a Delta coyote target through the grass on wheels just over the crest of a hill to give it some affect.....

The thoughts of it all alone make me laugh just sitting here....

Take care,
Bob

How about the perfect set-up? Sneaking in quietly witht he wind in your face, place the call and decoy out, get hidden. Start the calling sequence, then have the camera pan back to the hidden vehicle where a coyote comes out, sniffs your tracks, then walk over and relieves himself on your tire!! heh he heh Sort of like Ripley's believe it or not or hunting bloopers. I'm sure we could all have a funny little segment. Might even make a couple of bucks too.

Hey Sleddog, I'm in beautiful Chicopee now. Just came back from Hadley. Still a lot of nice country in the area but things are growing up FAST.
