Coyote rifle

I have a few heavy barrel rifles and a few sporter barrel varmint rifles. I have occaisonally used the heavy barrels in the past. But I much prefer a sporter barrel. A sporter can be just as accurate as a heavy barrel, but the sporter will heat up faster. The heating of a barrel should never be an issue calling coyotes. As far as caliber, you can’t go wrong with the 223, or 22-250. I have both, and if forced to pick one, it would not be easy, but it would be 22-250. I do not save furs at todays prices.

What sort of terrain are you going to be hunting? I started out with a 24" bull barrel but quickly went to a 16" carbine for coyotes. Im on MN public land that has thick woods and tall grass, Ive seen long range set ups be nothing but a hastle. Same with bipod and shooting stick type stuff, I watched my buddy have his 2 foot bipod extended all the way and have a coyote run under his gun, thats fun to watch.

I carried around a Remington VSSF 22-250 for years. I shot it very well. But I went to a spotter and I honestly haven't noticed any accuracy difference at all in regards to shooting coyotes and it's much more nimble and fun to carry.
