Baiting

I have been trying to entice my black coyote back with some goodies. It's near impossible to keep bait out from 130 miles away. A deer carcass lasts 2 days. Haven't seen the black one in about 3 weeks.

Wonder if using a piece of chicken wire to cover the bait to keep buzzards off yet leaving a way for a coyote to get under the wire would work?

I have thought about the wire HM but never tried it. How long has it been since I killed one? Well, it's been so long that video never crossed my mind. I have so many red and gray fox coming at the new house I can't keep the alarm on. I have a cell cam on the bait and just have to check it occasionally. I have a coyote that comes by about every 10 days or so, usually when I'm sleeping, then disappears. I had some fresh deer scraps out from processing one tonight and got lucky. Pea soup fog and in the cell pic I could just see a glob I thought too big for a fox. It was 12:45 am and I told my wife to hold the dog and let me check with the thermal. Sure enough there is two out there 150 yds. I don't have my perch fixed yet so I sat on the floor, opened the door and propped on the door jam. I also forgot I had hog bullets in and when the first round put it in spin mode, a second round was sent. The first round was a heart shot and the second in the front of the chest. This coyote still ran 100 yds. Biggest female I have killed at 34.44. Maybe video on the next one? We shall see.

Congrats Week, good to see. Sounds like it got a little western there to get this one down. No worries on the video, happens to me a lot.

Way to go Spot. Is that a 2 pointer there? Do I see a white tip tail? Video? Congrats!!

If you look at the tail on my coyote there is obviously something wrong with it. There are no guard hairs at all only the gray under fur. I know the picture is not clear but does anyone know what I am talking about and know what this condition is? Mites maybe? I see it pretty often. Ruins the pelt if I was to want to keep it.
Congrats spot on another one to the dead pile.

I know exactly what you’re talking about with the tail. I see it frequently up here in NY. I see the rubbing on the backs between the shoulders as well. I read about it once trying to figure it out for myself. I was told a bunch of different things from people that knew more than me, and I’m still not sure. I was told everything from Lice & mange, to them hunting in briar thickets and denning in culvert tubes! Lol.. apparently the metal tube would rub their shoulders going in and out. Plausible I guess in very rare cases, but they aren’t denning year round and if they were hitting culvert tubes that consistently I would change my hunting tactics!

Some form of lice seems like the likely issue from what I’ve read. I really don’t know though? It’s pretty common though. I do see it more as our season progresses. Seems like fur starts heading downhill from January on.

I had a hide tanned for hanging that was a decent looking March dog. My niece wanted one so I sent it out. When it came back, all of the tail guard hairs were missing. Taxidermist said it was common with late season coyotes as they’re getting close to shedding their winter coats. Who knows?

We got 4-5" of snow so I went back to the bait(picture from Monday) 2 more about 1/2 hr apart. Will get pics when I retrieve in the morning. Larger one(male) is right where I shot him. Female circled and started leaving, shot her about 75 yards from male, she was drt. Both no fur value, rubs. First time I have found coyote beds in that field. About 30 yards from deer.

What happens in metal culverts is when the coyote breathes condensation forms on the inside(top) of the culvert. If the culvert is small enough or has debris in the bottom(coyote is more confined) the guard hair on the coyote will freeze to the metal. When the coyote moves the hair breaks off. This could also occur to lesser degree in hollow logs or dirt dens. Of course there are genetic differences in hair quality in coyote. Some coyote will recover from mange, I'm sure the hair quality is much lower in those cases. We often have 2-3 day "storms" any coyote that is holed up that long, guard hair quality will degrade.

I've noticed a few buzzards circling over town lately (highly uncommon), maybe that explains it. Did not know that buzzards migrated. , I have witnessed a massive hawk migration (both Fall & Spring) several times over the years. I read up on it a couple years ago, and IIRC, the hawks migrate all the way into Central & South America.

Went back about 8 pm Sunday night. About 10:30 2 ran by fast and went into the woods NE of the blind 200 yards. The wind was supposed to change to the NNW after midnight. So I decided to wait and see if the 2 would come back. About midnight I thought I heard coyote far east and south. 12:30 I decided to head out, as I stepped out of the blind coyote started howling west east and north(2 very close north of me.) I got back in the blind, and glassed the field expecting a visit. 10 minutes nothing so I held the FoxPro out the window towards the bait. 2 mid volume howls, put it back in my backpack. A couple minutes later I got the rifle in shooting position and turned on the thermal. There was a coyote by the bait. He was looking NW I'm directly north. I scan right and see 2nd coyote. They end up together at the bait, I shoot one, 2nd runs a short distance and stops I shoot it. I look out the other windows with binos. Look back thru thermal and 2nd is gone, pan east with thermal and see second one moving SE, stops I shoot and drop it. Will get pics in morning. And range 2nd shot, it looked long.
