Checking heifers, spotted this coyote eating on one they killed when she laid down to calve. Didn't have my rifle but I had a rope so I played the wind against him while he had his head stuck in the carcass eating. Finally wised up to me sneaking in on him and made a break for it. took me a couple loops to get him caught but he had a full belly and wasn't moving as fast as could have been. Ol' Sorrely didn't know quite what to think lol.

Sorry, Bud, they don't give them up voluntarily šŸ¤£. I've done skull mounts on a Gemsbok and a Scimitar Horned Oryx and you have to slip the horn sheath off and clean off the stub and let it dry or I'm told they will smell. They slip off pretty easily. The Gemsbok:

I had one scimitar skull mount done (on the right) and decided to do the next one myself (on the left). Used a piece of mesquite for the base so I could cut it thicker at the top so horns would clear the wall. Since the log had been in my wood pile for at least a year, I figured it would be cured. It had been hanging at least 6 months or more when it cracked right where I drilled the hole in back for hanging and dumped the whole thing on the tile floor. That resulted in the missing nose. šŸ˜²

I guess Murphy's law applies. Still very impressive mounts. Thanks for sharing.

My taxi had me help unsheathe antelope horns once. The way he would do it is let the skulls sit out in the Vegas sun a week or more to loosen up. Then hold the skull on the floor with your foot while you twist gently as you pull them off.
When that sucker popped off I just about lost my cookies! That's the last and only time I offered to help him.
He then would put borax in the horns to dry them out and kill the stench.

The taxidermist who did my eland was unable to remove the sheaths and was a bit concerned about any odor. Don't know what he did, but whatever it was worked as there was never any odor. The scimitar and Gemsbok I did come off easily after a week or two in mild temps.
