I love the challenge to "domesticate" a cat! It has been said,"you don't own a cat, the cat owns you"
I once took in an Australian cattle dog who was said to be untrainable. Took some time and more patience than I thought I had but he came to take place as the most loyal, devoted (to me) canine I ever had. He would totally ignore everyone's attempt to be his friend or even be petted. We were best buddies for 16 yrs. He still has a place in my thoughts.
