Which .22-250 should I get? Sako or Savage?

Sako hands down. I've owned 2 Savage rifles, a 10fp in .223 and a Stainless 12 fluted heavy barrel in .22-250. Both had problems. The 10fp although scary accurate would misfeed 20% of the time. The model 12 stuck, it would string shots giving groups of about an inch. Eventually I sold both though I still miss the 10fp.

Five to ten years down the road, a Sako will still have a pretty good resale value. The Savage....well it will still be a Savage, only an old one.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and all the helpful feedback! I've arranged to fire a few rounds with somebody else's Savage VLP at my local range tomorrow. Hopefully this will help me make up my mind, or at least steer my in a direction. Appreciate all the quality info and advice regarding the different rounds and hand loading too! Will let you guys know which one I choose.

Enjoy the weekend!

I would take a pickup over a Mercedes any day.... There's just something women like about a PickUp Man..

Take the Sako man, and don't look back.. As far as the pickup truck analogy, they are great, just don't screw up and buy a ford.. lol.

Buy the Sako. Its an investment that will hold its value that you can enjoy. If you use it with reasonable care, it will very likely increase in value over time.

A Savage in any used condition is next to worthless if you ever try to sell or trade it. Granted, they generally shoot very well, but they are not an investment.

Get either one and go shoot some meerkats! A meerkat safari is on my bucket list..the list that will never happen lol. That would be a tough decision for me also, my head would say savage but my heart would say sako. With the sako being a good deal I'd probably lean that way unless you expect a lot of long strings of fire at the varmints from a single position. The bottom line is that buying a rifle is always a crap shoot, even rifles with good reputations. Buy one and hope for the best!

And if you have time I'd love to hear about your shooting and hunting regulations there. It will let us know what we have to look forward to in the US after the next 8 years. Welcome to the forum and post lots of stories and pics!

A. The OP is in South Africa

B. "Buying American" is nearly impossible with most things now a days. Especially in regard to electronics and vehicles.

C. The Sako is a much more refined and cleaner fitting firearm. And I can't ever recall seeing a bad review of a Sako.

sako will gain equity,if you dont care buy the savage.Ive owned a ton of rifles and the savage 12 is by FAR the most accurate rifle Ive ever owned.

Ive owned many Savage and and a few Sako. Savage aren't always excellent shooters plus they are ugly, feel cheap and have a nasty bolt operation. Sako is 10x the rifle...Ive never had one shoot worse then 1/2 MOA.
You get what you pay for. If you have the money...go SAKO all the way.

Cheers!!

OP says they are priced exactly the same...All my model 12`s are either laminated or HS Precision stocks, far from feeling cheap or flimsy. And will shoot very small groups out of the box.Even smaller groups if you do a bit of customizing, and run handloads as well.Imho of course .

Missed that they cost the same...I can't believe a Savage would be priced the same as a Sako..Like others have said here. Id take a Sako even if it was $1000 more but to each their own.

Cheers!!

I have a savage axis, 22-250. It looks ugly especially covered in camo tape which is hanging off in places but it shoots hornady superformance 50gr vmax like a dream. a rifle is only as good as the groups it shoots. When I've got a coyote out there 200+yds I want to be as confident as possible where that bullet is going. good luck with your decision
