NYS Coyote Hunters

no coyote, but I did shoot this male red at 11:15 Pm tonite...
As I scanned with the "Predator Light," I caught a quick reflection of eyes at the far end of the field - probably 250 yds away. Was I over-tired? Did my eyes deceive me? Should I have stayed home and spent so time with my wife? Heck no, I continued to call. A few moments later, the eyes are now approaching the call. The Baby Cottontail worked again. So did my Remington 700 in .223. The crafty fox was trying to circle the call, but I altered his plans at 100 yds.

Well, if it makes anyone feel better, I hunted last night from 10 PM -2:30 AM, tonight from sunset-10 PM. Didn't see a set of eyeballs either night, but got some responses in the distance. Much as I like hearing at a distance, it was almost too still the past two nights, but certainly cold. The moon sure made a difference over the snow covered fields tonight.

Will give it another try later tomorrow night, as I'm finding that the one big property I hunt doesn't seem to get any action until after 9 PM.

Wow man your doing great ! Looks like you're getting some good ones also . I too managed a red last night . Also on the baby cottontail .must have been the sound of the night.

NY Yote , Alot of us have howled yotes in during the daylight . Normally early morning late evening . never midday hours for me . although I know guys that have . Most times they don't reply back , They just show up. I think howling should start to get better as we near the breeding season , seemed to really pick up last year during Feb .

Nice fox!! Shot gun?? My taxidermist is alittle peeved at the size of the hole in the cats I brought him. Seems like what ever I hit it puts a big hole in.

2 stands last night on powerline 9- 10:30pm. 1st was dry, second had a red come in from behind me where i had just drove the Atv through 10 min earlier. Never saw eyes only the back end of fox fleeing as i panned the hand held light. Never had chance to get gun up!

Tried to call red back in but only stirred up some roosted turkey that made a [beeep] of a racket in the tree tops. Kind of gave me the CREEPS as i was alone and didn't exactly know what the sound was at first!

The Good News - I called in a bobcat two nights in a row.

The Bad News - I'm hunting about 3 miles from the nearest legal bobcat WMU.

This is the first time I ever saw a bobcat while hunting. I think I would have expected to see Sasquatch before a bobcat, but sure enough, two nights in a row. Like everyone else, you really have to see it to believe it, but both nights it came in just like everyone says. It took a good 10-15 minutes from the first eyeballs in the woods to get the cat to come out. They are certainly in no rush, nothing like a grey that comes charging in. Both nights it kind of slowly made it's way in. I also noticed that unlike the fox and coyotes I've seen, the bobcat does not seem to stay focused on the call the entire time (I wasn't able to track the eyes the whole time).

Now I guess I have to go strap some trailcams up to see if I can shoot them some other way!

Dave , I was going to ask if you are getting the second one mounted . did you get them both in the same area ? Looks like familiar terrain in the pic . maybe it was that one that got away on us .

Knockem , Keep up the good work! at least someones dropping the yotes this year.

Matt, Yea I'm going to get the second one mounted also. You just never know when you'll ever shoot another on again. Man the taxidermist bill is a killer this year. I shot the second one on state land near the jail about a mile back in off the road.
Knockemdown, nice to see that the yote aren't eludeing all of us. Did they come right in or did they seem skiddish?

Everyone seems to be wack'n fox's this year. I see lots of tracks but get no takers.

Hey everyone, Im a new to the site and figured I would say hello to the rest of you NY guys. I have bagged a few yotes in the past while out deer hunting and got a nice Red Fox this past gun season. I just started going out for predators though and am hooked after my first night hunt. We did 8 or 10 sets, saw 3 yotes way out and 2 foxes. 1 fox popped out at 20 yards and then ran back into the brush before I could get him and the other got lucky as I missed him around 50 yards or so. Hopefully Ill have more pics to share before season is out, but here i the Red I took earlier in the year.
