NYS Coyote Hunters

Andy

Send Clint down here........

If he's got something that works, we want to use him as bait..............LOL

Howlin' rarely works much down here. Even if you mimic their own calls back to them exactly, they'll usually shut up.
Every once in awhile you'll get a "pack retard" to step out of the woods to get a little lead in his diet, but very rarely.
I've been doing the howlin' thing for years down here just to play with them way back when I didn't even hunt them. I've used both high end howlers, and even the cheapies.

Like I said, once in awhile it'll pull one out based on normal instincts & curiosity I guess, but for the most part, they just seem to shut down more times than not.

Maybe ol'e Clint has a plan....eh?

Take care,
Bob

M4,

Congrats on some nice looking coyotes. That red one is certainly unusual.

Hey Bob could you send some "challenged" coyotes my way?
Are you guys getting this high wind today? This weather is for the birds! Looks like I have to visit the Cabellas in Binghamton. Oh well..

edit: oops meant to say Gander Mountain /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Clint uses a 100 grain bullet I believe(At least that is what I think he said at a seminar).
Handgunr, send the wife up to Wayne county, I'm a jeweler, than I can buy more toys :)

Hi ya Locals, I am just starting out after yotes... I have taken up trapping 3 years ago, and this year finally got my first coyote a female adult prime yote..
At first glance as I pulled up to my trap location, I seen three critters in the spot where my traps were set, Two was deer I could tell from the long legs, as I got closer I thought Oh dang I caught a yearlin'.. as the two larger deer stood there snorting and stomping there feet at the smaller looking critter.. I wish I had taken a Pic... As I got closer the two adult deer seen me and ran off... thats when I seen it was a coyote and held firmly in just a #1 3/4 northwood...I was Hooked that day to try and get more.. So I Picked up some rifles to try out. Traded some foothold traps for a cass creek predator caller. and want so much to connect with a coyote before March 26th.

Growing up here in Western N.Y. Most of my life I had seen alot of yotes, Back when I was a youngster in Franklinville,Arkacd and Yorkshire I seen LOTS... and then when we would go to visit my Aunt and Uncle in PIKE we would see a real lot out that way.

Then as I grew up threw the years and Lived in Cansaraga for a number of years on Mills street and Down near the baseball Park.. I Hunted alot for woodchucks up that way on Wompuls(spelling) Farm and out in Swain at my Uncle and Aunts .....

I Hunted alot of Woodchucks when I Lived and worked on The Chitsey Farm there In Nunda... I Also Have a Aunt and Uncle there In Nunda that Have a Farm with Clidsdale horses...Some of ya Locals there May know them.. Bill Gibson..

Now a father many years later I alot more settled down, I Hunt alot of farm fields for woodchucks here in the Canisteo area and Hornell spots... I Hear More Yotes then see them here...

I Am Looking forword to this summer as I am not connecting with the first rifle yote...and I know I can count on woodchucks to Get that Itch to fire off a few rounds for me..

Take care and god bless all my neighbors and all predator and Varmint hunters..

Fantastic group we have here and Pleased to share my time and listen to alls views here.

I currently live in the town of Arcade and have hunted many of the areas where you grew up.(Scottie14823) There are coyotes here but there are 3 or 4 groups of guys who hunt with dogs. I hunt with one of these groups and we are up to 17 or 18 coyotes as of today. I also like to call but I like to head for some areas that are far from the dog-chasing areas. I really just focus on fox but will be trying more coyote sets in the future. I relly like this site and it is great to see so many from the WNY area.

JRinNY,

Is the Ol' Motirola factory still in use? As you Travel threw Arcade and Up the Hill to Pike, there was always Yotes Up in the farm lands on the left and right hand side.... Lots of red fox I seen was Near and along Whiskey Swamps that was right along the Train Tracks....

Larry Carns still running the junk yard up there? and who else do I remember up in them Parts.. ( Johnny Herdmen ).... The Junk yard guy with a Human Skull as a Candy Dish, till It got stolen from him, and last I heard was He got a cut in the Leg,allowed gang green to settle in, and passed away from it, and now His son owns the Business and they still haven't found the skull...

Odd How growing up in N.Y.S. Can leave alot of roots for some....

I Sure Miss the Snow fall years back up your way.. My Cub Cadet,Speedex and Massey Ferguson sure would of Liked a Life up that way with there plows and tire chains on.. he he...

I Have A Brother near Jamestown and a Sister in Silver Creek......

Take care and good Luck the rest of the season as we have till March 26th to fire some rounds,

Scottie & JR....

Welcome to a great forum for such a sport...

I'm located 1/2 mile north of the Village of Pike, and although we've nailed a few in the last couple of years around here, things are pretty thin lately.

I've seen them in my travels down towards Swain, and further south, but going down there and calling them hasn't really produced anything.

We just keep on plugging away in hopes of scoring.

Hey Wrench.......I'll keep that in mind...If I had to buy jewelry to keep my woman happy, I'd love to support your habit in the process (no kidding), but she has her "Dealer" friend that she deals with. She sends her so much business that she gives her "perks".
Almost as bad as a drug addict I think. Well no different than my gun habits I guess, now that I think of it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Take care,
Bob

Dave, We made it out again. No coyotes but, wouldnt you know it we practically had to shoo away the fox. Three came to within 100yards of us. I swear to god they know the season is over!!!!

Hayzer,

Regarding fox.......ain't that the truth....

Almost non-existent until the day after season....

Last year I had them dancing in the fields in front of me....yep, you guessed it, the day after season ended. My partner thought for sure I was going to blast em' just out of frustration.
Naw....they won fair & square......part of the rules I guess.

You'd almost think they were watching a calender or something.

Same thing happened this year...fox were pouring out of the woods on the next hunt right after season ended.

I figured I'd try and take out my frustration on coyotes, but apparently they've got the same game plan.

Take care,
Bob

Sounds like you guys are having some fun. Haven't been able to hunt for a few days. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif It's nawing at me. Headed to MA this afternoon. May go out one night on my friends farm there. The weather is going to change for the worse here and I'm not going to be able to take advantage of it!!! Still have a month left. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Should be able to get in a few more stands before it ends. Got to try more AM hunts.
Good hunting to you guys.

Perri

Edit: season closes in MA today. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Trash the idea of going out there.....

Well guys, I got one down this morning but i did not call it in. I was just about ready to go to work, about 6:45 this morning and looked out the back window and saw a coyote mousing up a storm in the middle of a cut hay field right behind my house. I grabed my Savage 12VLP .204 and headed out the door. The coyote watched my every move but never ran away. I dropped her with one shot. The bullet(35gr.Berger)hit the yote in the right eye. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif(I must of flinched) It was a female about 35 pounds. My first predator this year! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

well jamesdogk you were right, things are really heatin' up! went out this morning and called in a nice female on my second stand! you can see the pics under the heading "goose212 finally scores".

encore.204 good job!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif take em any way you can get em!!

Encore....

Congrats.....good for you.

Flinch or not....dead is dead.
I've had those shots in the past...poor rest, or bad positioning...or just plain excitement, that's hunting.
I've rarely had the perfect setup when shooting, and it always seems like they come in on the worst position, at the worst time.

What did that .204 do to the head ? I can only imagine.

Well, called or not, it's a dead coyote and one on the board.
Just yesterday the local Humane Society (Bunny huggers) released a coyote that was found running around Rt#400 with a trap hanging off it's leg. They captured it, rehabilitated the yote, and released it yesterday.
NICE.....thanks for nursing it back to health.......so we can pop the damn thing....LOL

Maybe it'll be a little more comfortable around humans....(and easier to call in....LOL)

Good goin'
Bob

Handgunr, your right, my rest was a wobbley fence post! The 35gr berger is a good fur friendly bullet and left about a golf ball size hole where his eye was. Shot was 155 yds. A V-max I think would of taken the top of his head off!

FYI, a New York State Trooper, Andrew Sperr, was shot and killed on 3/1/2006 investigating a suspicious vehicle after a bank robbery. The robbery and murder occurred in Horseheads, New York and was 5 minutes from my house. Andrew was a well respected LEO and an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He was 33 years old and a 10 year veteran of the New York State Police. He was divorced and had no children. Thoughts and prayers ae with his family. RIP....

I heard today he managed to hit both suspects, even though he suffered multiple GSW's while doing so.

Very sad.

Rick
