NYS Coyote Hunters

JamesdogK I know some people from North Collins, it looks like good coyote hunting land. They said they have seen them, but they don't hunt or own much land and I havn't had the ambition to knock on doors up there yet. Silentaaron, I'm no expert, but I could probably show you a few things about hunting fox/coytote. Im probably resting up after the coyote contest this weekend, maybe in a week or so, well go out

DOD, Perri & gang,

Sorry to report the weekend was pretty flat....just that wounded Red....hunted hard too. Yesterday, we spent the whole day on the ridge at Rattlesnake Hill. Lot's of yote & Red sign, but we've only been up there once before this, oh, I think the year before last.
It was impassible back then, but yesterday, with the warmer weather, we went where ever we wanted.
We located a few more nice spots that weren't so restricted back a couple years ago. I hunted a nice ravine towards dusk. We didn't see anything, or have anything come to the calls....it got rainy and windy before dark, but just being out was well worth it.
Dennis and I actually started the morning out over at Butch's property, but after the 4th round there with nothing, we're putting that place on the back burner. It showed some promise, but I told Dennis that I remembered that Butch use to complain about them being around during deer season. It dawned on me that all the hunter's down in the park were pushing them out and up onto Butch's property. Deer season being over, I'm sure they're back down in the park where they can enjoy some protection.

Weds....Dennis said he's off at 2:00 and wants to head back up to Bank Rd. (Carlton Hill State Land)....Got to try to get some fox on the boards as the 15th is the end of it all. Normally, at this time, we've done well, at least on Red's anyway.
Coyote's run for another month and a half after fox ends.

Aaron......
I saw that you posted that you were from Rochester. Where abouts ? We're about 50-55mins. from the heart of the city, so if you want to hunt out here, or up someplace near you, drop me a line.
My partner and I go out pretty regularly, and if you prefer your locale, and things aren't too far apart, maybe we can make a trip up there in the next week or so.

I know, it's always nice to pair up with other's when you're getting started. Been there, done that.

Take care,
Bob

Joe,
yes,we have a few yotes around. I'm also involved w/ a gang that hunts with dogs, and we take a fare share when there is snow.
I have been trying to call one in for a few years now, but havent coneccted yet. Although I dont intend to give up, it can get frustrating. I have an aquaintence in Fredonia who has invited me to accompany him and his buddy, in the upcoming weeks.

Okay NYS hunters time to get our acts together. LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifThese predators are making us look bad!!!

Hunted last night from about 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Nice night but no takers....again. Trying some new call sequences with both the vocalizations and distress calls but trying to throw the distress in immediately after the vocalitzations. Bob, started with two rounds of soft distresses first.

Got some recommendations on making sound loops so I don't have to fiddle with the e-caller remote. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Need to know what sound editing software some of you guys use. If I get some loops put together that sound good, I would be willing to share (provided I'm not breaking the law).

Anyway, it was a beautiful evening. Made two stands on the same farm about 1/2 mile apart. That place IS going to produce.

Perri,

Before the internet boots me off again after a lengthy typing episode.
Download these two free softwares and PM me.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_audacity/

and............

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Audacity is the software to tailor your sounds, but it doesn't have an "MP3 Converter" and it uses the one from the "Db Power Amp Converter" software.
Audacity is free.....I believe Db Power Amp is too, but I'm not positive.

Take care,
Bob

Hey Fella's,

Wish I had good news but can't seem to put it together. Tried another spot this evening after work. Walked a long way on a ridge line before I saw any coyote sign. Then I came across a nice secluded overgrown pasture with a bunch of coyote tracks. Set up the FX3 out in a small bush close to some cover on the other side of the pasture. Went back and got comfortable along a stone wall and some small trees. Did the quiet distress two times and vocalizations three times. Called it quits after a little more than an hour. Even though I didn't see anything, it was peaceful sitting out there in the dark.

Hope someone has a success story to share. Oh, for the other newbies like myself, I believe this was my 24th stand of 2006!!! Like they say, you can't shoot em sitting on the couch.

Perri,

A second vote for Audacity .

To make a sound longer (the free ones are usually to short) just highlight the file hit copy, position the "cursor" at the end and the hit paste. A pretty friendly program that you can learn by tinkering around with it.

I generally "loop" on the mp3 playewr using the repeat function.

Shoot 'em up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Perri,

Same luck here......nuttin'
We've put our time in, but all no show's.....even the fox.

Gotta be the warm weather....and in a couple of spots, we've found deer carcasses laying, half eaten. No wonder they aren't interested in calls.....lack of hunger, and hard to run with full bellies I guess.

Keep on trying.........

Good luck,
Bob

freebm,
question for you and the other guys, when you guys hunt an area one day, when will you hunt that area again? do you wait a day, a week? just wondering how you guys go about that?

Bob,

I read in a different post that a new guy was getting discouraged so I wanted to show how many times I've been out for a total of 1 coyote. It's easy to hunt a lot living in an area like this. Land is everywhere and the farmers just chuckle when you ask permission to hunt.

Goose,

I don't hunt the same area often. The most I've hunted one place is directly behind my house. I think I've been there 4 times. NOT to the same stand though . The other places I have been to only once or twice. I haven't gone back to the same place in less than ... 8-9 days. Years ago I use to shoot a LOT of woodchucks. I've gone back to those areas and gained permission to hunt again. Also, I'm counting "stands". The most I've made has been three. I usually make only one. My hunts are typically after work for +- 1 hour.

Maybe I'm posting too much about my LACK of success. But I like to share what's going on and like to hear how others are doing regardless of whether they got something. I've learned a ton of stuff from the folks here. It's just a matter of time before I get it sorted out and things start to click.

Good Hunting,

Perri

Oh,

From some of the threads, it seems like if apredator wasn't overly startled or scared when they were called in but not shot, you can go back after a couple of days lay-off. It appears that guys see the same coyote or cat several times, then use a different trick or call to finally get them. They seem to be the real experienced callers though.

Perri,

No, I don't think it would be a bad thing to educate new callers/hunters to know, or realize, that this sport is mostly setups without scoring, than the other way around.

I think if they realize that they'll go home empty handed more times than not, it'll make them understand that it's not necessarily something that they're doing wrong. At first, many moons ago, that's what I thought....I was doing it wrong. But I found out later, that it wasn't really the case. Maybe a little calling inexperience at first, which is what I think most newbies feel guilty about.
They maybe feel that it's their poor calling that's not inticing the game to come in.

I've proven otherwise to my sons by just going out and blowing on a call with no hand cupping, or any other emphasis to the call other than just pushing air through it.
Had a nice red come into that one, and my kids were amazed. Listening to tapes or calling sounds is the best way to make sure, or at least relieve the anxiety whether you're doing it right or not.

I always tell a new predator hunter, "as far as bagging predators by calling, be prepared to be disappointed more times than not".

Take care,
Bob

Wasn't able to get out yesterday. High winds turned this mornings' hunt into a non-happening./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Did go hunting out of frustration and called some crows. Shot one and called it a day. May head out after the game this evening IF we get some snow and the wind dies down. A few flakes are falling now, but I think it's just a tease.......... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Lynn,

Next setup, I'll take the Tom Petty tunes off the e-caller.

Maybe we should try some of Bromberg's music on them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

It's either that or tactical nukes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Got out Friday night, saw a fox run across the road on the way to meet up so I thought it would be a good night. Met up with Fred and we made a stand in a nice looking location he was familar with but saw nothing. We were on our way to second stand location when we heard at least 4 start howling, made a stand in a corner and tried to call them over but no dice. We moved towards them a few hundred yards and tried another stand but nothing, not even a fox.

Went out tonight for 2 stands. The first was in a secluded 2 acre field, nothing. Moved 200 yards down to another field that drops off into a valley, nothing again. Didn't hear any vocalizations at all tonight.
