Flattest shooting caliber

I agree that if you are planning 1200yd + shooting, or need to do a lot of damage, the 338 would get the nod. But for hunting and target shooting, the 7mm is an excellent choice. Plus, I absolutely HATE brakes and I can shoot the big 7mm all day without one.......

How much does the 7mm Rem Mag lose to the Ultra Mag? I know a fellow who is thinking of selling a 700 Sendero in 7 Rem Mag....don't know if I can spare the cash here at Christmas time but if the price were right....who knows?

Yeah I guess I wasn't thinking of these extremes I did look here's what i found. .308 3000 fps .450 bc 155 grain vs .224 4000 fps .221 bc and 40 g bullet, 250 yd zero 1.5 sight height both rifles. so at 500 yds the.224 is .054 seconds ahead of the .308 bullet and 6.3 inches flater shooting, but at 700 yds it's nearly a dead heat with the .224 just edging out the .308 by 3.8 inches and just .01 faster to target now if we look at 1000 yds we see the .308 pull ahead by .257 sec. and beat the drop by 77.3 inches, but then again the .308 got to the target set at 1000 yds first since it's the fastest to the target it's flater shooting, well at least from 750+, but i think my point is still means something, and like you said the .224 wont have enough power to kill nothing more that a small cat at that distance, yes we need to look at the bullet bc and speed to get an idea of how flat it shoots. Thanks for pointing out my flaw but sometimes i just throw things out there off the top of my head just to get people thinking.
No harm no foul.

This is the latest build. Still haven't shot it. It is a 7mm Rem mag. 162gr A-maxes are the only bullets I have loaded. It will have no problem getting 3000-3100 fps safely. Less recoil and less powder than the 7mm RUM, and I would guess markedly longer barrel life. It will reach out to 1000yds easily.......

That depends. The 6.5x284 is excellent. The 264 is too overbore IMO and will eat up barrels faster than the 7mm. Which the 6.5x284 will also do. Both rounds are very capable LR performers, nonetheless.

The 270 is not even in the running.........

Once you get out to the 1000 yard area flat shooting is very secondary to wind drift. At those ranges you have to range the target and adjust for elevation. Wind drift and mirage become much more important than flat trajectory.

Jack

Wind drift is always the hardest thing to judge. Trajectory is easy, in comparison. High BC bullets are a nice thing to have....

VAhuntr,

It looks like the 7mm RUM is around 200 fps faster than the standard 7mm Remington mag. with 160 grain bullets.

Yep. About 200-250fps I'd say. Lot more powder/recoil. Shorter barrel lifwe too, I'd say.........

I loaded some Retumbo and possibly some 4831sc. I do have a lot of other suitable powders on hand, including R-19.....

To be perfectly honest, of the big 7mms, I believe the 7mm Dakota to be of the best case design. JMO...

Brass will make you go broke however........

I run a 7-08 imp (aka 7 hadly )
140 ber vld @ 3200 fps It a little hot but safe
I have ben running it in rifle golf all year and it does just fine out 1000.I have taken 1st place every round I played score was 26,27,and a 28.
