Coyote rifle

I’m a daytime caller…and prefer sporter if we’re talking steel barrels. I really like about one diameter fatter than sporter if I can get it, they used to call it a “heavy sporter.”

Depends on suppressed or unsuppressed. Suppressed i usually run a shorter barrel so I don't mind a little added heft to the barrel to help balance it out.
Unsuppressed will probably be a longer barrel and thinner

I much prefer a standard/light barrel for most of my calling. I have two 20Ps that go coyote hunting, one is a 22" HB and the other a 20" pencil, I much prefer the short pencil for calling. I will only have two HBs actually Varmint weight and and they have been called upon to kill called coyotes but they always seem to come in close anyway so the pencils get the nod. I

I'm old and a light rifle is fun to pack, they are more than accurate enough for up to 300 yards and I shoot them off of sticks so they hold well. For me no need for a suppressor, after nearly 70 years of killing stuff without one they seem like a waist of money.

My heavier barreled rifles are pretty much going to be used for varmints/paper from now on.

I’m undecided on going with a .223 sporter or .22-250 HB. Will be calling and most likely sitting in one spot for some time.

Here’s what I would do…read as many posts as you can even from other sites and see which calibers have coyotes run off…a lot of folks are honest and won’t tell you it drops them everytime they shoot. I’d eliminate those calibers…always have “enough” gun for whatever you’re after.

If you are a fur harvester then which caliber may play a bigger roll. Also learning to sew and do it well will also save you some coin when selling.
I don't save or sell hides. Have used pretty much everything from 338wm to 221fb to take coyotes. Dead is dead, no such thing as "over kill". Only less fur damage and more fur damage.

Seriously caliber/cartridges makes little difference I find a 222 Rem to be an ideal coyote killer same with the 20P as long as I put the first shot where it counts and not ask it to do more than it's capable of. A 223 is a dandy. Coyote cartridge I used a bolt 223 for 20+ (1966 to 1990 ish) years, just added another 223 to the mix last year. The 22-250 has been the go-to for coyote killing for 70 years, still with us and killing coyotes. If pelts aren't a big deal the 243, 6mm ARC or any of the modern 6s might be a choice.

You can get a 223 in a light rifle with a smaller action, Howa mini, CZ- 527, Mini Mauser. The 22-250 needs a fullsize short action Rem 700, Howa 1500 etc..

I have just been thinking of a specific coyote rifle, not for night hunting.
I'm thinking of a Ruger American Gen 1. A Shaw light sporter. barrel, I would love a 26 but last time I looked Shaw only had up to 24 in the light sporter in a deep throat 22tth with a 1x6.5 twist, threaded for a suppresser.
