Biggest coyote I ever got.

I've weighed coyotes off and on for several years now and have never broken 30 pounds. A 50-pound canine around here would be a Mexican wolf and come with a big fine and probably jail time. :)

Here’s my biggest so far…

I knew he was big when I saw him on camera before being caught. Made sure the scale was in the truck before heading to check traps.

Sorta like the 150” deer folks kill…until you actually put a tape on it. Then they realize their 150 is actually a 130’s” deer.

Kino, do you think any coyote has ever weighed 50 lbs? Like, as in, Can it actually happen, and has been accurately documented?

I agree with you that most are just bad, boasting estimates, but you make it sound like it’s just impossible. I haven’t hit 50 personally, but came close in the high 40’s. Some contests in the NE, the heaviest coyote category is won with coyotes over 50 lbs.

Just curious what you really think.

I saw one weighed at 51 pounds once. How accurate was the scale? I don't know. It was a heckuva big coyote though.

I've weighed two that I have killed at over 40 pounds. Biggest one weighed 44 pounds. I don't know how accurate my scale was either. And I've killed a couple that didn't get weighed that I'm sure were in that range.

I used to weigh them all when I felt I had to prove something to myself and others. Over time and 2 different scales, it wasn’t uncommon to kill 40 lb coyotes. Quite common honestly. 45 lbs happened a handful of times and they were brutes. And then my high point… was like 48 or 49? It’s the ounces that are messing up my memory thinking it was 48.9 or 49.8? Doesn’t matter really. It was a hog of a coyote!

Were the scales certified? No. Were they dead nuts accurate? I don’t know. I’m saying that when you’re that close to 50 lbs, it’s not a stretch to think 50 lbs is a real thing. Every scale, contest and hunter that has weighed one can’t be dreaming it. They’re not common, but they exist is all I’m saying.

Someone here posted the results of a PA contest not long ago. There was more than one entered over 50 lbs in the same contest.

...we shoot a decent number here over 40...heck, many of the females alone are in the 35 range. We've shot them around 50 also. My scale has been within a half pound of certified.
The other thing to consider when going from field weight to say certified scale in contest, is that coyotes with lose many ounces between then. Shot placements and handling have to be figured in during that contest...

Absolutely i do think there has been some over 50, I'm just saying that 99.9999% are bullshit claims. Guys do all sorts of shenanigans to make them look bigger as well, same way bass fisherman learned from Roland Martin and Bill Dance to take pictures.

I look at a coyote the same way as a 200" whitetail, unless it's on a certified scale with witnesses and inspected for internal contents like lead weights, I'll remain skeptical. Why??? Because of 2 things mostly, lots of people are full of poopoo and with about 40 years behind me trapping and calling and thousands of dead coyotes at this point, I'm yet to see one and I've been fortunate enough to put boot tracks in a lot of states.

I will say, if I was looking to kill a 50lber I would probably go to New York or Ontario, maybe northern Pennsylvania. I do believe the biggest coyotes in north America come from that area, same way if you want to kill a 200" whitetail in the wild you'd go to Saskatchewan or Alberta.

Okay. Just checking. Lol… I can agree with that. I do envy your trail of boot tracks too!

I figure the bigger I kill, the more fawns/poults I save. Landowners buy into too. Doesn’t get me extra pay, but does ensure I keep getting invited back.
I don’t have anyone to brag with about weight except my son and he gets as excited about it as I do. We catch/shoot enough 25-30lb coyotes so a 40 something is pretty cool for us.

I hear about these monsters all the time but I'm yet to see a picture of a 50lber plus on a scale in a legitimate setting, with it being so rare surely you have a picture of it on the scales??
Hey, you're just going to have to take my word. I am not trying for any record here. The simple truth is, if I thought it was a big deal I would have called Guiness. Scale hangs in the shed where I skin deer earlier on in the year and I got interested. That's all. He was just so damn heavy and I checked him. I doubt Boone and Crockett will be interested.

Last comment from me. This is the last time I weigh one. I just thought it was interesting. I guess I never realized it would turn into a question of my honesty. As far as photos go, anyone who has followed me knows, I take lousy photos. Bottom line, you don't have to buy it, it's free. Trust me when I tell you, that a normal coyote for me is no where near the size of this one. I will post the hide when I get it back in a few months.

I know for a facked the big hunt here in PA. they have weighed in some 50+ pounders in all the years of that hunt, because they were the winners and that was on certified scale to.

Don’t stop weighing them, pictures don’t lie, I have only had a handful if deer weighed over the years due to draw hunts where they record the stats or I had 1 processed and they weighed it, 166 and 163 were my highest field dressed, my last yote no idea but suspect close to 40 either side. Most have been in the 20lbs +
