Baiting

NC-coast, it's a long read but lots of valuable info in this thread. Well worth the time since you're just getting into the baiting game.

Well it went below zero last night, what a differnce some cold weather makes, the new bait site was hit hard, I had a fox feeding on the sunflower seeds at home, driveway patrol alerted me around 8:30, checked my one camera that I have out and have a fox and coyote at the old site also, tomorrow I am setting up two more bait sites on private property, scouting there on tuesday showed activity at both places.

Hey, those are good photos DannyK.

We got 11 inches of snow here today in just 4 hours. I'm hoping the coyotes will be hungry and on the move soon. Things have been really slow here for a while.

nice pics

today picked up a rabbit and a nice female coyote road kill, one of the state road guys keeps an eye out for me. opened up 2 more sites and got a baitsicle cooling down tonight-- it has some deer legs and some other goodies along with the good old bacon grease. been quiet for a few days now that we have some fresh snow I hope things pick up. Hopefully we can get out calling this weekend for a while. the little bit of fresh snow we got should help give us a clue as to where the activity is. last time we went out in snow up to our wastes and no tracks -- still had fun- it was the first time out calling for the year so it was fun no matter what.

Here are some NC fish gut pile fox & coyote.

The fox has been visiting every night, the coyote has been 4-5 nights in a row.
I just got my scope kill light. Time to try it out!!

Well, looks like the snow and cold brought a visitor to my bait site. The weather has been so nasty,
first rain and then snow, that it had been three days since I checked the camera.

This coyote showed up on the 15th around midnight, then again early the (17th) around 5:00 AM according to the camera.

I had one camera mounted on the post with the IR lights, and put a second camera on the small stake
with the Driveway Patrol transmitter. The second camera got a good video, up close.

Here is a photo.

And here is a video clip. Click on the photo to see the video.

I plan / hope to stay at the cabin tomorrow night. Maybe it will return.

Ol' 6mm06 is back on the prowl. Better strike while the iron is hot David.

NC-coast, glad you've got'em coming to your fish pile. What kind of fish are you using? Also I know you don't want to do a lot of disturbing your site, but some of those vines, branches, etc. might need to be cleared to prevent your bullet hitting one of them.

How will you know when one shows up? Also my experience with the kill-light is that canines will see the source. It does tend to spook them on a baitpile, so when you hit them with the kill light you need to be ready to shoot pretty quickly. Your results may vary, so just letting you know my experiences.

Jeff, you're just trying to pick a fight! LOL.

DoubleUP, I hope to strike tonight, only these darn coyotes don't always cooperate. Nothing at the bait site for the past two nights. The snow is still pretty deep, making it difficult for them to get around, no doubt. They're hungry, so maybe I'll get lucky.

Monday and Tuesday nights are supposed to be down to between 7-13 degrees. The forecast gets lower practically every time I check it.

Checked the new bait site this afternoon, looks good, temps are going to drop below zero for the next 4 or 5 days, will wait a few days before I go hunt it, also freshened up two other sites this afternoon.

DoubleUp,
My bait pile is in the woods off of a field. My problem in this area is the woods are so thick that shooting into them is not possible, there are alot more vines and brush than can be cut. I am hoping to keep them in the area and call them into the field edge for a clear shot.
As far as fish type, I use whatever has been cleaned at the fish house. Mostly saltwater but I did use several catfish carcass, they don't seem too picky. I just stop at the fish house and dig up a 5 gal bucket full of whatever is there. Our temps were in the 70's for the last week and I could smell the fish for several hundred yards. MMMM MMMM

Drew first blood last night with the 300 blk. About an hour before sunset, the fox that has been a PITA came back for a rare daylight appearance. He had been keeping me up all hours of the night for the past week. No night season for them here, so was glad to get a chance to take him out during daylight hours.

Not a yote, but breaks the ice this year. This afternoon, I'm gonna put out the rib cage from last year's deer, and spread out the hide and forelegs at the edge of the woods. Hope that will pull the dogs in and keep them around longer.

Nice pics and videos, guys.

Good to see activity picking up for you all!

6mm - got a feeling you're about the break out of the dry spell, only a matter of time now...

Could the camera on my bait sight be scaring the coyotes? I have a bait sight with coyote tracks on the back side of it, but the coyotes wont touch it. I have one dead deer with lots of deer scraps in the sight. I have a camera about 15 ft away on a tree. The only thing I get pics of is eagles.

Lefty, nice going man. Always good to draw first blood. Nice gray too! How did the 300 do on the fur?

NC-Coast, hope the calling them into the open works out for you. Keep us posted on your progress. You ought to be seeing some bobcats with all those fish.

Kevin: The coyotes may have to get adjusted to your scent being there. The cameras shouldn't cause much problem. I've had infrared pictures, videos, and regular flash on many of them without them paying any attention. They get accustomed to it and hunger over comes fear.
