Annual Groundhog tally for 2012

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad passing - certainly not an easy event to handle. But you seem like you are handling it well and have some things to occupy your mind - great shooting! What model 204?

I must have walked 5 miles of fencelines and hedgerows and didn't even see a groundhog today.

Lost my Dad back in 2004, even before I started hoggin, but still think of him when the time slows to a standstill while waiting for a one to appear in a field I'm hunting.

What Savage 223 are you waiting for? I got a Venture in 223 in the fall last year and have not had the chance to use it much. It shoots real well at the range. Expect it to do in the field as well.

Thanks for the words guys. I was able to see my father every day when we brought him home last Monday. I was just heading out the door Friday morning to go visit with him when my sister called and said he had passed. I'm ok with his passing knowing he is in no pain and in a better place. I could have been angry with it but what good does that do??

Wahoowad I'm shooting a Savage LRPV in 204 Ruger.

for being hunters ! Take care

Thanks Tim. Calling us hunters would be an understatement!!LOL I can remember countless days that my father would pull me out of school early to go hunting with him. He would show up in the classroom already dressed in his hunting clothes. The other kids thought that was the coolest thing ever. Teacher would ask him what he's doing and he would reply "going hunting with my son" and off we would go. Good times for sure.

I've got the Savage Model 12 VLP in 22-250. Sweet shooting rifle!!!

That's some good shooting Jim. Pistol whipping a chuck is harder than it sounds, especially on a slim 155yd shot. That XP sounds like a nice setup. Once I satisfy my rifle thirsts, I hope to make the pistol rounds again. I started groundhog hunting when I was 18yrs old with a T/C Contender pistol in a 30-30Win 14" and a 2.5x T/C scope. Still got it, just need to knock the dust off and try it again.

Dogbone I won't get the rifle until the end of this week but here are some pics of it.

Savage Model 12 FVSS in 223 with a VXIII 4.5-14x40 w/ varmit reticle. I'm hoping it shoots as good as the 204. Planning on taking it to Wyoming in June to thin out some pdogs!

Thanks! If it shoots as good as it looks then it should be a tack driver. That is if I do my part.

Jimmy and I hit it again on Friday. We spotted this one just poking her head out behind the weeds. Eventually, Jim let the air out of her at 256 yards.

I put a new scope on my 6PPC and we roughly sighted it in and I toke a poke at this one at 158 yards after missing her on the first shot. I couldn't find the entrance wound but here's a pic of the exit between her shoulders.

Jim spotted this one at around 258 yards and dropped the hammer on him. We waited about 1/2 an hour before I walked up for a Kodak moment. When I got to within 10 yards of him, he dove in the hole.

I believe I would count this one as a hit!

Thanks Eric. Wish one of my daughters would show interest in hunting but neither one does. Nor does my wife.

My father and I had some great times together in the fields and on the water.I'll always have those memories.

Eric

Sounds like you both had another great day together. Two good friends spending the day shooting poodles. You are both lucky to have each others friendship.

Dave

Eric , The farmer came over yexterday afternoon with his wife to do a little fishing .I told him about Friday afternoon and he smiled from ear to ear . Dave sorry to hear about your lost .I can only imagine mines at the age and health that we dont do anything together anymore , pops very fraile . Grab you a buddy introduce them to groundhog hunting and enjoy. Eric Harris did tell me that there's a large male coyote on the property he was clearing the other day on the loader and it ran out in the field where we were hunting Friday afternoon . Cory yep this pistol is different I wanted to add some excitiment to the short range . I was shooting the 6ppc rifle last year and out to 300 you could miss up and still kill em so i purchased this XP 100 .

Dave sorry to hear your dad passed. Sounds like you have some good memories and hunting stories to pass on to the next generations.
Also, good looking Savage. Love that port job. Can't wait to bust a few chucks with your upper when it gets here. I took the long way home from work last Friday with the HMR and shot seven chucks from 120 out to 200 yards. Absolutely no wind, so the HMR did the trick. No pics, but I'll be out again when the sun pops out with my camera.
