6mm vs 22-250

Any 6mm with a .473 bolt face and a 58gr or 65gr Vmax should fill the bill. If you really want to impress the coyotes a 25-06 or 25 WSSM with a 75gr Vmax would fill the bill.

I shoot a 25-204 and find it too destructive for coyotes, but I like to skin them out.

I don’t believe he questions the 22-250’s ability to kill a coyote. Shooting a dog at a hundred and watching it run 300 yards then dying makes for some long walks. If you’re doing tournaments that’s a lot of time. If your night hunting it makes for a difficult find afterwards. If you’re lazy it’s a lot of extra effort… 6 creed/.243 win with 87 vmax if it’s a bolt gun. 6 arc with 87 vmax if you want an AR.

If u are shooting coyotes with a 22-250 u can ass shoot m and they aren't going 300 yds. They are not cape buffalo.

lol. I’ve had a couple get away from low, or gut shots with a 22-250. I am looking at building a 243. In a perfect world I shoot them good and they go down immediately. On coyotes that come running into the call, and stop facing, quartering, etc I am wanting something with more destructive results…. I hate tracking coyotes and do hunt tournaments where it has cost me a lot of time I should have been making stands…. Plus, who doesn’t need another gun lol.

We will see how this shakes out. Thanks for the input thus far guys.

Haha, well everyone's "season" is subjective, I start hunting in September a little, some in October, skip most all of November because of deer season and hammer them in December, January, February and a few days in March so my "season" is almost over!

I'll finish up well over 200 for the year and killed in 5 different states so far, if I take another trip I'll add some to the list!
Holy that's a pile of coyotes.👍
Up here in Canada I am approaching the 200 mark....but it's taken 10+ years.😆

Ya know I'm the same exact way, but live out west where the shots can be as long as you can see sometimes and they get hung up. I used a 25/06 for the first 15 years or so with 85/100/115g NBTs. Then I wanted something a little different in the 6mm flavor so I went 240 WBY with 87g VMAX. I never lost any dogs with a bad hit with either. Just a whole different class of power and destruction over the little 22 cals haha. Good hit, bad hit, it didn't matter. Now I just finished up a custom built 6 Creed and use the 108s ELDMs and again, it's pretty nasty. Same as a 243 at the end of the day which I believe is the best dog rifle, behind a 25/06 and 240 WBY that is 🤣

I have a 6 creed shooting 108’s. It hammers the coyotes. With that said I still prefer a 22-250 coyotes. You hit them with the 250 and they go down! I also prefer not blowing massive holes in them. Bobcat comes in I’d rather a small entrance hole than a hole
Exit hole when I’m saving fur

I was using a 22cm with 75 eldm, and it hits hard, now I'm using 6 saum with 90 game changer bullet at 3750 with 275 yard zero, hold on fur to 400 no thinking point and shoot and surprisingly does not blow them up, best strictly coyote caliber I have ever used, almost feels like cheating

I own a couple 243s and a 22-250. To be honest both are great coyote cartridges. Both kill with authority, but the 243 will do more. But, in my opinion, get both. It is not an either/or decision. Buy the 243 now and then a year or two later by the 22-250. You will want to own both.

Between the two I would choose the .243 but my buddy has a Ruger .270 with a ported barrel. It's loud but I've shot .243's that kicked harder than that .270 does. And it'll blow the heck out of a coyote. If I had to go out right now and shoot a coyote at any angle that presented itself at 0 to 400 yards with any rifle I could get my hands on it would be that one. It's not bad to shoot at all. If you could find one like that, that's my pick. Worst trouble is it's loud but what gun that's not suppressed ain't loud? If you win enough of those contest you can buy some hearing aids. No biggie.

Just make sure none of your huntin buddies are directly beside you where that concussion can get to 'em. They'll need hearing aids before you will.

Have shot lots of coyotes with both. Both will provide the DRT results you are looking for, but I would have to give the edge to the 243.

You are not going to fix the problem by shooting a .243 if your problem is a coyote running 200 yards after being shot by a 22-250. Every coyote that I've had to track after shooting them was a shot placement issue. Sure if shot them all with 87 gr V max instead of a 22 cal bullet, there is a better chance I wouldn't have to track a coyote. However, I don't think it would make a difference often enough for me to consider it a significant factor. That is just my opinion based on my experiences.

It's a wonder I ever retrieve a coyote, I think a 222 Rem is a great coyote killer, I'm putting together another in a combo gun 2 3/4 12ga/222 Rem. My 22-204 with 40gr NBTs was my go-to pelt hunting rig on northern tier coyotes. I built a couple 22-250s and rarely take them in the field. My 6s just get used when I'm not going to skin them out unless it is a lucky no damage hit.

What is the under/over on that?

I like the 22-250 but have no use for one,
load a .243 with a fast twist light 58gr. 70gr, it's as fast or faster than a 22-250 and as accurate, load the .243 heavy up to 115 gr. and you have a big game rifle. the .243 is way more versatile than the 22-250 with a better bullet selection. YMMV Murl B.

THE SPLASH!! So one thing I noticed over the years, the 50gr vmax in the 22-250 sometimes splashes on the shoulder, coyotes sometime recover and make a brake for it. When a splash occurs with the 70gr tip out of a 243, the generally stay down. The 50 gr 250 otherwise does awesome job. Good hit doesnt blow them up usually
