.22-250 vs .223 for eastern coyote hunting

Hey guys I know it’s been asked a million times but I’m new to coyote hunting and thinking about getting a rifle specifically for that. The two options are .223 and .22-250. I’m in east TN so not shooting a very long distance with an occasional 200 yard shot being the farthest. I know both will kill but I just wanted some opinions. Thanks.

Everyone has their favorite cartridge. Do you reload? If so then you can take advantage of the many 22 caliber bullets out there. If not then the 223 is going to have the edge in terms of factory offerings. Do you want to shot an AR or bolt gun? I know they make an AR for 22-250 but it's an AR10 and heavier than an AR15. I shot an AR in 223 and I really like having quick follow up shots in the dark. Overall, I think both cartridges will get it done, just a matter of what you prefer.

It’ll be a bolt gun. I’m leaning towards the ruger ranch in 556/223 just because it handles to well. The other was a Remington 700 adl in .22-250. I’d like to eventually handload but for now it’ll be factory ammo.

I'd use a .223 and 55 grain Softpoints. I do use that actually or at least some of the time. It'll kill any coyote within 200 yards most definitely.

Factory .223 for coyote..look at Underwood Ammo Controlled Chaos.

I love my 22-250s for day calling coyote...but currently use .243 and .223 strictly for night.

I think I would opt for the 22-250 just because it does everything the 223 does and then some. As soon as you think 200 yards is all you'll ever need, a 300 yard opportunity will present itself.

250 and don't look back. I ran 223 then 250 and now 243 in SW PA. I want them anchored and not running even 30yds because here 30yds can mean unrecovered because of thick, impenetrable brush.
Not saying the 243 drops them all immediately but much better chance of it.

Are you going to be shooting that Ruger suppressed? The short barrel without a suppressor is going to be loud and even more so with Ruger's compensator on it. I would switch it out to a linear compensator which will help some. Please report back on how it shoots and the accuracy you are able to achieve with it and what ammo works best for it.

I don’t think I’ll put a suppressor on right now if I get the ruger ranch so I’ll probably use earplugs until then. I had almost bought a .223 a while back but I didn’t pull the trigger on it. A friend of mine had a .223 and he said he kept getting runners so he switched to a 22-250. Although his problem probably was shot placement not that he didn’t have enough gun. I know they’re called barrel burners for a reason but I like a pretty fast bullet from a 22-250. The only thing is ammo is a little more scarce and a bit higher.

I’d go for the 250. Travels faster and hits harder. Unless you’re more south in the bigger farmlands, spinners and runners can get lost fast in the wooded areas.
