I hunted a lot when living in Arizona. If anyone wanted a javelina I could find them in short order. To me, the similarities to feral hogs is very apparent. Yes, javelina are smaller, a large example would be a male and weigh 55 lbs or a little more. Globe Arizona, which is county seat for Gila county, in times past and may to this date, sponsored an annual javelina hunt and presented some nice prizes in various categories. Examples; oldest hunter, longest distance traveled to the hunt, heaviest weight javelina, earliest check-in time, youngest hunter and a couple more I don't recall. All prize winners must present their animal to be eligible for that prize. I know for a fact that their was some cheating going on that may enable a very young or old hunter to receive a prize. My hunting partner at the time was reading the brochure outlining the previous records and told me that one of us could probably win the earliest check-in time since during our quail/dove hunting we always saw javelina. We were in the field bright and early on first day of the hunt (Saturday) and he took one at 7:20AM and I took one from the same squadron at 7:30AM. We could have easily checked in by 8:AM but our game plan was interrupted when a San Carlos game ranger showed up and informed us we were on the reservation and our tags were no good there. He told us to put our game in his truck and we were both angry because we had checked location before we hunted and it was clearly marked as area 24A and the reservation was area 24B. We told him if he wanted those stinking things he could load them himself. That angered him and he talked about taking our rifles but decided against that. He issued both of us a citation for hunting without reservation permit.
When we got to town we went to the judge who would be hearing our objection to the citation and asked him if he would go with us to see that that area was indeed marked as not being on the reservation. He agreed and off we went and along the way told us he had dismissed several such citations because the game ranger had admitted that the signs marking the areas were routinely switched by the tribal members. Bottom line, I missed out on a really nice Remington 700.

That sucks!šŸ‘Ž Good thing you had a reasonable judge, though.
