Wind Checking Method, Tools, Apps, Tips?

Curious to hear about everyone's methods for checking wind direction in the field; milkweed, powder, grass/leaves, lighters?

I have a local weather app on my phone where I'll check the general expected wind direction/radar and in the field I use a Cirrus wind indicator I keep in my chest pack. Several buddies have made fun of my wind indicator but then they always end up with one...

Check the flag pole when I leave the house to see where the best roads to hunt.

Toss a handful of dirt or grass in the air to fine tune.

Turn around and feel the breeze on my face or neck.

I keep a weather app on my phone to check wind but find it fairly unreliable.

I snag TS-100 flatting powder from work and put it in a little flip top squeeze bottle. Essentially the system Bohunr and Spurchaser is using, but this stuff is ridiculously lightweight with no detectable odor. A 5 gallon pail holds 1lb of powder. Its intended purpose is to flatten the gloss level of printing inks. A good puff has really decent hang time that you can watch for a bit.

Al, I B laughin!! None of them around here.
Being a night hunter, if it is cold enough, I see which way my breath is going in my headlight. Other than that, I hope I can feel it. It is a pretty good bet in my hill country that if there is no or very light wind it will be going down hill OR down stream/hollow.

I hunt at night a good bite so the white powder bottles are the easiest for me. Hard to see dust in a red light at night.

Winds change often and don’t always match whatever app you might be using

I’ll be honest, I won’t go out unless I have a 5+mph wind. Same for deer hunting. Nothing worse than making the walk with a perfect wind getting set up and hitting the caller and 20secs later the winds switches.

Deer hunting.

I check my phone so see what direction it's SUPPOSED to be blowing. Then, I have a few pieces of flagging tape tied to the lower limbs of my pecan trees so I look at them. When I get to my stand I have the same tape tied on a few ground level limbs and one up on my stand.

Coyote hunting. Check phone, check pecan trees, then when I get to where I'm going, I usually just throw some dust or something in the air.

Two or Three strands of sewing thread taped to my barrel easy to see and works great, Orange Survey Tape tied to my Jeep Radio Antenna, all I have to do is stop and look at it, Simple Murl B,

I have a LaCrosse weather station on the wall in the house, with the wind meter on the roof, that I rely on.
Trouble is, the neighbors next door to the south have 2 big pines that can skewer the true wind values.

I do rely on this website all the time for current and future wind trends, which are actually pretty accurate.

I'm also always checking those big ass wind towers, pictured above, that are only a couple mile outside of town.
