I've been loading with IMR4895 in both Federal and Winchester 243 brass...58 gr V-max bullets...21" barrels... while shooting this load from different rifles... and the Federals are always 75-100 fps Hotter.... why...? and they are loaded and seated exactly the same.

from my Howa rifle... 44.0 gr. Win = 3779 fps Fed = 3856

from my Savage 110... 43.7 gr. Win = 3664 Fed = 3751

from my Blk Savage 110... 44.0 gr. Win = 3771 Fed = 3857

and when I get up close to 3900 fps... the brass looks hot... so I'm going to be staying around 3800 with Win brass... that is where my Blk Syn stock Savage 110 shoots 3/8-5/8 groups at 133 yds.

Dan,
Weigh the cases! I'll bet the Fed. cases are heavier, thicker brass= less internal dimension, and therefore higher pressures.
Let us know........
F1

Only reason would be the Federal brass has less powder capacity, thus raising the pressures.
Measure how many grains of powder each case actually holds of the same powder.
However much more powder the Win brass holds, back off that much powder from the federal load.
If the win brass holds say .2 grains more, down load the federal cases by that .2 grains.
That should get the pressures close and even things out.

you Guys are correct..... the Fed brass weighs.... 180.4

and the Win weighs.... 163.0

I kept thinking Win brass must be thinner... but didn't think about weighing it or reducing the load in the Feds to even them out.... good idea... and I'll see what their powder capacity is just out of couriousity.

for now I'll just keep them sepearate.

thanks Guys...

Your right Ven... with water they weigh....

I've learned something today...and who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks...

218.0 Win

234.0 Fed

Just curious, what were your ES, and SD numbers over the chrono with each?

Nothing wrong with Winchester brass really. QC is what it is these days, but it is good stuff.
