When did the 25-06 become unpopular?

I had to pick up some bullets I had a LGS order for me yesterday and I asked about a possible trade. My Ruger tang safety in 25-06 for an AR rifle. The guy behind the counter told me the rifle and the caliber weren't very popular. I just replied "really" and paid for my bullets and left the shop.

I am doing my part to "bring it back". Seriously I have wanted a 25-06 for about 8 years and finally ordered one. Every single article I read about it was how it was seriously under appreciated and what fantastic cartridge it is. I have a tang safety in 243, how does your 25-06 shoot?

I am a big fan of the 25/06.
Have made some spectacular shots on deer with mine. And it will knock the snot out of a whitetail deer!
The only reason I haven't used it in awhile is because it is not suppressed.

That's a fact!

Too true! I have to admit, though, that I traded a 25-06 for a 6.5 Creedmoor, but only because it wasn't that accurate and I didn't want to rebarrel. But as a deer rifle out here I think they are close to ideal.

Throughout my lifetime I have only known firsthand a couple people to hunt with this caliber.
One friend had 1 and let me use it.
So I never had a like or dislike for one and will probably never own it.

its a cool caliber, but i think its always been a bit of a niche caliber. ive only konwn two people who owned them, but i'll agree with the above

I have two, a red pad tang safety Ruger and a Remington Sendero VSSF II. I thought with the anti's throwing all this gun reform BS around, that even though I'm not an AR guy, having one might be a good idea, if and when the prices go threw the roof again. I was considering maybe swapping the Ruger for one. IDK, just thinking???

you'll probably just have to go private market to have an outlet for it is all.

the quarter bores do have a following, but i can see why your LGS may have been a little iffy on it for a trade is all.

For the same reason 250-3000 and 257 Rob. died, they are nitch rifles between the 6mm/243 and the 7mm and not heavily suported by ammo/bullet makers.

Just picked up a 1977 model at LSG, and was lucky to get it as most of this caliber is gone as soon as it comes in. Posted below in New used gun.

I built one way years ago on a 98 Mauser action with all the, then available, add on/conversion bells and whistles, trigger, bolt shroud, safety, etc. Used a Mcgowan barrel and stocked it in Mesquite. The darn thing shot better than any other rifle I had ever had at that time.

I wish I could remember the loads we worked up but ya had to hunt for bullets. This was back in the late 60's early 70's. Killed several deer with it and shot a bunch of paper just screwing around. Intended to take it on an antelope hunt but that fell apart. Never got to shoot it past 200 but knew it would work. Sold it to a guy who was slobbering over the gun.....

I thought it was cool to have an 06, a 25-06 and then wanted to build a 35 Whelen (no one even talked about a 6mm-06 back then)..... so much for that with school, work and girl friend.

I guess the 25 is a bit of a niche caliber but there does seem to be some rejuvenation going on....

I would love to have a Ruger #1B in that caliber today.....Just me

I've owned a .25-06 for 38 years and I think it's a great caliber for hunting. Yes, the .25-06 is a niche cartridge and there aren't a lot of bullets available for it. If you look there are some decent bullets out there but it could use more. For high bc bullets there are some out there. One that comes to mind is BIB

If you look at the "In" cartridges they are short and their velocity is about 2800 fps, something that breaks 3000 fps is considered a barrel burner. Because of this most long action cartridges have become passe, not just the .25-06. You'll hear how the long action makes the rifle heavier but reality is it adds about 1/2" to the length. How much weight do you think that adds?

When I bought my .25-06 I had to buy ammo at the LGS, you couldn't find it anywhere else. Now even my local Walmart carries it, so it has gotten more popular.

I bought my rifle for groundhog hunting in Ohio. At velocities of 3400 fps it was a spectacular long range cartridge for it's use to 600 yards. It could outshoot my friends who had .220 Swift or .22-250's because of the better bc of the bullets. Recoil wasn't bad at all and the cartridge could be used for larger animals with the heavier bullets. I've gone deer hunting with it and even bear hunting in Canada. So it's pretty versatile.

If you do a search for 25-06 vs 6.5 creedmoor by ron spomer you can see how the .25-06 does vs the hot today cartridge.

Never been a follower so I'll stay with the .25-06, its done everything I ever asked it to do.

Lastly to what they told you about the .25-06 at the LGS, have you ever been told anything good about what you want to trade?

My Ruger Predator 25-06 shoot awesome.
Oh Did I tell ya it's Threaded!
Did a shade tree trigger job, breaks a clean smooth 2#.
Marry it up with the Omega and you have a heck of a long Range Yote Smasher!!!

I think with the Berger 115 VLD hunting bullet and Fed Match primers and backed with RL26 powder should run about 3200 and should be a good long distance runner.
