Trijicon or Leupold VXR for night hunting

I am looking to put a scope on my R-15 and do alot of night hunting and have been looking at Trijicon 3-9x40mm(TR20-1 and TR20-2) and Leupold VXR 3-9x40mm. Will the you be able to see the green dot at night with the Trijicon or should I go with Leupold VXR 3-9x40mm which allow to adjust brightness settings. What one would you go with. Any feedback would be very helpful. Thanks Tom

I have the Accupoint 3-9x40 with standard crosshairs and green reticle.

I use it at night under a full moon with no other light source and can see the tritruim reticle with no problems. However, a light will wash out the illumination of the reticle but because of the bold reticle I can see it fine.

I don’t own the VX-R , but have played with it in the store and the illumination will show under any light or no light conditions (day, night, etc).

In short, you don’t need an illuminated reticle with a light source (bold reticle and good glass trumps all).

I have the Trijicon ACOG 5x50. It's got the best glass in any of my other scopes which includes Leupold , Burris, Weaver. In daytime the reticule is illuminated by fiber optics, at night or in a completely blacked out room the radioactive reticule shines bright. No batteries and is quick and very accurate. Having jitters about spending that kind of money on a scope that I had no experience with was soon relieved when I got to shooting with it. If I had to do away with all of my scopes except one it would be the one I'd keep.

I have a Trijicon 3-9 and a 1-4. TX has it right in that you can easily see the green dot in complete darkeness but can get a bit washed out using a light. Its still usable though. I also have a VXR 2-7. I had the 3-9 on my AR, but switched to the 1-4 because of the increased FOV and somewhat limited shot distance afforded at night, especially where I hunt. I have both the VXR and the 1-4 trijicon in Larue mounts and actually will switch back and forth between the two depending on hunting conditions.

Having said that, if I were to have one optic for day/nite hunting on an AR, it would be the VXR 2-7, which is a great compromise between short and long range use. Either way, you are picking two great scopes

I have yet to ever actually use a VXR. I tend to like what I see, though.

I've had 2 Trijicon 3-9x40s with amber triangles. Have 2 buds with same scopes also. For fast target acquisition and night hunting I think they are better than the Accupoints with the dot reticles. The dot is very small. Trijicon has actually been considering making it a hair bigger from what I hear.

So far we have had zero problems with the 3-9x40s....

Get the Tijicon... if it doesn't satisfy you with brightness just buy one of those bobber glow sticks and tape it to the top of the fiber optic with a tape that doesn't leave adhesive or a ring cut out of a bicycle inner tube.

2MG,

My eyes like the triangle post (looking at it in the store), but I wasn’t sure how precise (?) it was compared to crosshairs.

Thought it might be a good fit on a pig gun (6.8 AR) and on moving targets though.

SM,

The glow stick idea is Interesting, but if you hunt 3-4 nights a week it could get expensive.

Don't know about the Trij 3x9. But I had a 4 power ACOG circle dots on my AR. Plan was to use it as night hunting scope. Too brite and circle dots too busy. I put a VXR 2x7 on and I really like it. I would like to look through(at night, hunting conditions)the ACOG with just the cross hair

I'm not a night hunter, but am planning to give it a try this winter. Just ordered the Scanning Kit from Boondock. I like the VX-R 3X-9X 50mm, Firedot on my R-15 and figure to use it for the night work.

BTW: I do have an extra VX-R 3X-4X 40mm in the safe. PM me if you decide you might be interested.
