Torn on what to make for a calling rifle

The old days would plague me on this one. A calling gun suggests your gonna be taking closer shot's so my choice would be a 222 Rem. Had one in 788 Rem years ago and by far the most accurate rifle I ever had. Not only that but you can shoot it and watch the bullets hit, I like that. Wasn't even able to do that with my 223's. Only other cartridge I can think of for calling rifle would be a 22 Hornet. Again shoot and watch the bullet hit. Saw a 222 Rem several years ago in a 788 for sale and didn't have the money at the time. Used to take out my old 788 222 Rem and shoot sugar cube at 100yds just to show off. Boy that rifle was something else. Unfortunately have no idea where you'd find one today so would be a matter of finding a used one in 222 Rem or 223 and having it re-barreled.

A Hornady 50 gr SX is a very good bullet for the 223 cartridge out of magazine length restricted rifles. Accurate, cheap and pretty fur friendly on critters smaller than coyote. But kills coyote, hard. Run them 3200 fps and above out the muzzle. I like them best with a 1 in 9 twist or slower, just hard to find a reasonable priced 1 in 12 AR barrel.

EVERY NON DEMOCRAT AMERICAN SHOULD HAVE A 223!!!!!

!!

They are great, I would seriously suggest some 53gr TSX or something like 65gr SGK, TSX penetrates like crazy and I can get great velocities from them, 65 SGK are softer than you think with decent penetration and lots of expansion and bullet fragmentation. I havent hit a fox with TSX yet and no Bobcats with ether but 65 SGK hit like a brick with a pin hole in and quarter size exits on fox. My opinion, soft bullets really limit a 223 but there are fantastic hunting bullets that I've thought are great from fox to deer and everything in between.

Buy a cheap savage short action, buy a 222 barrel, install on the savage, add a boyds stock, or your stock of choice and a good trigger. Done

I know it's kinda ho hum these days, but there's nothing wrong with a good 223.

I built a new one last year with a X-Caliber 20" 12" twist chambered in the 223 Rem, not the Wylde chamber. The Rem has .025" freebore, better for the lighter bullets for seating them into or close to the lands & still fit proper in the mag.

I have fantastic loads with either the 40 Ballistic Tips, 52 Bergers, or the 53 V-Max.

The 53's I tested out to 400 & kept them under 1/2 MOA.
I'm getting a 20" upper in a .223 and was wondering how the 40gr perform for flat shooting and accuracy?
