Torn on Coyote Caliber.

Im a bit torn on what do do for a AR build.
Gun will mainly be used for Coyote hunting and just general shooting.
My original thought was to do a 22 Arc. But with the lack of Ammo it makes it a bit tough.
Then I thought I would go with a 204, Ammo is not horrible hard to find. But isn't always easy.
Then I thought why wouldnt I just stick with the 223 that I already have...But just put a good barrel in. But I'm having a bit of a hard time choosing which Barrel to use.
I think for what I do and want the 223 would be the best choice just for ease of components, ammo etc.
But would like to hear some suggestions on a good barrel that docent cost an arm and a leg.
Can you all give me some suggestions?

Something that also intrigued me was the 17-5.56 that Kak Industries has.
Has anyone used that setup before?

22 ARC ammo and brass is easily available... much more so than 6mm ARC when it first came out.

I have an 18" Ballistic Advantage barrel that I've not shot a lot nor have I reloaded for it... but it's proving to be MOA capable and the cost is extremely affordable.

Last year I built a 223 around a X-Caliber 12" twist barrel chambered with their 223 Rem chamber. This has a shorter .025" freebore, perfect for the mid range bullets I wanted to shoot, more specifically the 52 Berger & 53 Vmax. Accuracy & performance is fantastic, with groups at or below 1/2 MOA out to 400 yards.

They regularly have 20% off sales, one of which just ended. They'll be another one coming soon.

If you look to stay with the 223, send me a pm. I have a Ballistic Advantage barrel that Iā€™m not using that could go down the road. It shoots pretty good from what little I shot it. I just have way more barrels than receivers, so I could turn loose of a couple.

I'm surprised you are struggling to get 22 ARC ammo. Hornady cartridges seem to have pretty consistent ammo availability for all their cartridges, the Creedmoors, the ARC's, and the PRC's, in my neck of the woods.

If you aren't going to shoot .223, (which kills them just fine), and you want to rebarrel your ar specifically to kill coyotes, take a look at 22 nosler. It seems to be the pound for pound king of ar varmint cartridges. If you compare the load data for a 22arc to a 22 nosler, using smaller bullets, like the 50gr and 55gr variety, the 22 nosler gives you more velocity with less barrel length than anything else available. Ammo is cheap and very available on ammoseek.com.

22 nosler with 55 ballistic tips and cfe 223.
Cant go wrong with a White Oak 12 or 8 twist but only 8 twist varmint 24" in stock at the moment according to their website.
I also have an 8 twist 22" Wilson Combat that shoots great wirh 55 ballistic tips and cfe223. I only seen a 20" available now though.

Shoot them center of the shoulder 300 and under with the 223 and it will dump them as good as any other caliber. Itā€™s when you shoot them behind the shoulder youā€™ll get runners and spinners, where as something like a 22-250 is going to be more apt to DRT them in that scenario.

If you want to shoot a lot buy a 223 barrel. If you want to be able to say you have something different that costs more to shoot, is harder to find ammo for, and isnā€™t what your buddies use, get something like a 22 nosler or the sorts.

Or just step upto the big leagues and build a bolt gun and leave the rickety ARā€™s for shooting recreation

Thatā€™s gonna ruffle some feathers šŸ˜

Better yet buy an axis in 223. Buy some shelf ammo from the local store and make it as boring as possible. Oh and never make a marginal shot.

Internet question.....I want to build a new AR for coyote hunting. Need suggestion on cartridge selction.

Answer from other internet user. Build a bolt gunšŸ˜

Ohhhhhh the internet!

Was looking in the new Hodgdon Reloading manual and they no longer list 22 Nosler data but they now list 22 ARC with bullets from 62 to 95 grain. The twist they list is 1:9. Make no sense to me.

Boring, but stick with .223. Ammo is always available, you can choose from a wide array, and you can get some varieties on the cheap for those times you just want to have some fun blasting.

Honestly I always figured AR lowers were cheap enough to put together you never really tear one apart, you just add another.
Bca has complete sidecharging uppers for 179.95 right now. Pick up one of those and slap the barrel of your choice on. Only thing else you need is the longer gas tube and maybe gas block.

My answer was going to be, save your money and start buying reloading equipment so you won't ever have to worry about factory ammo availability. But after reading this, I'm not going to.

If you are not reloading, it makes no financial sense to build a gun with a "non typical" chambering. If you are stuck buying ammo, build a 223 with a decent 20" heavy barrel and be done.
