Tailgate gun box

I am looking for a toolbox or gun box that will mount on a tailgate of a truck.

Seaveral years ago I saw a TV commerical for a gun box that mounted strait to your tailgate. It was water tight box capable of holding 3 scoped guns, and for the life of me I can not remember who the manufacture was. Is this something that I dreamed up or is this really a product?

I am looking to enclose the bed of my truck with a shell of my own design and am not worried about losing the use of the bed.

I have found a place in Austin that makes custom tool boxes but they are want an arm and leg to build one ($750). It is actually cheaper to build the shell.

All suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Hey Sean,
I work for a pipeline company and in the field alot the hands use a neat tool box that fit flat in the truck bed. It is called a pakrat, they are water proof and slide open like a big draw. These folk may make what ya lookin for.

Sean, Cabelas has something like what POPPER is talking about in their "Automotive & ATV Accessories" catalog. I was just looking at the new one yesterday. Check out their catalog or website for something like this. And NO, I don't work for Cabelas.

USA,

yes tailgates are easy to remove but you have to let them down to remove them. The design that I have come up for the hard shell to cover that bed does not allow the tailgate to be lowered unless the hard shell has been raised. The hard shell has a angle iron frames that sit on top of the bed and locks. I am also going to install one of those tailgate latch locks.

The box will not be used to carry the gun all the time just when I am going to the range or taking a trip. It is tiring to have to pull out and put back behind the seat the guns(they are in gun cases) everytime I what to go some where. When they are behind the seat the guns are still visible and can be stolen.

Radmohunter,

I have looked at the product that Cabela's offers but that is not quite what I am looking for .

One thing that can help with tailgate liftoffs is to place a stainless hose clamp around the open end of the hinge pin and screw it down tight. At least they have to work for it now.

I used treated plywood and 2x material to build a false floor with slide outs lined with "eggcrate foam" for carring guns. Strapped in place with velcro. One of 3 can be left unlined for misc. gear. In this fashion, you can still have a bed for whatever needs. I do "seal" the ends, as dust on gravel roads migrates through the tailgate.

How about some pics.?

I would RF, but I don't have a DC, spending too much money on Encore barrels /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif But it's not difficult, 1/2" bottom, 3/4" top, 2x4's 6's 8's depending on how deep you want your false floor, plywood for the slideouts(basically an open top rectangular box) couple tubes waterproof construction adhesive, plated screws, velcro, couple hinges, hasp latch, and weather striping to keep the dust out of the opening end. Put the center stringers in so you have three equal compartments for the slideouts. The slide outs 13.5"x7.5', wouldn't have to be 7.5' long, and you really only need enough egg-foam for the gun and ammo holds. But if you're like me the more storage the better( got to have room for a coleman stove and such). But should they be shorter, put stop blocks in to keep them in the rear. Throw in the cooler, portable shooting bench, air mattress, and head for the PD town.
If anyone would care for slightly more detailed instructions, PM me I'll give you my Ph# as it would be the easiest way. I don't have a plan ,I just started gluein and srewin. I did have the lumber yard pre-cut the plywood, as my circle saw tends to cut circles /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
