Should have stayed home

I had the day off and planned to go out for some morning stands. Only problem is our wind switched and was coming from the south east. I never have luck on a south or east wind but it was -5 degrees so I had to try. Got sick last night too but I really wanted to go hunting.

I drove 2 hours to a place that usually has a lot of coyotes. As I’m opening a fence, I hear my back tire pissing air. Decided to go hunt and deal with it after I made my first two stands.

Right away I call a triple in with a combination of howls, raven and jackrabbit distress. Winds perfect and I’m hidden good. For some reason they hung up at 350 and 430 yards. I think the fact they didn’t see ravens in the open sketched them out. They would not budge so I was getting moved over to shoot the one at 350 yards. Something happened because they hauled ass over the hill and we’re never seen again. The next stand was a blank too.

Got the tire changed and decided to hike over a hill and get away from the road. I ended up a a decent sized valley that had about 10 mile deer in it. I played the same sequence and noticed the deer run off. There was a coyote above them on a big clay cliff/butte. The coyote wouldn’t commit either and leaked like it was getting ready to leave. I ranged it and got 518 yards with a decent crosswind. I wasn’t going to let it walk so I dialed up and held for some wind. Had a good trigger press and dumped the coyote off the cliff. It rolled and tumbled a long ways but my damn triggercam died about a quarter of the way down. Anyone thinking about getting one of these trigger cams should know that they don’t hold up in very cold conditions.

Anyways, I blanked on three more stands before I decided I was too sick to keep at it for the rest of the day. Found a couple new spots to call when we get some better conditions, so the day wasn’t a complete wash.

Man that coyote wasnt done rolling down the hill when the video ended. Whats up with that? ;) Nice shot!
Oh she rolled a long ways and there was a big cliff. It was going to be epic footage until I heard the thing beeping. Too bad this damn triggercam can’t handle single digit temps. I’ve missed some good footage the last two outings because of it shutting down. Going to tape some hand warmer on it next time.
