Remington 6 1/2 vs 7 1/2

Anyone use these in a 223? I know people say you shouldn't but I've also read some folks do and they work fine. One said the 6 1/2 has a cup thickness of .020 and the 7 1/2 is .025. Same guy said the 6 1/2 thickness (.020) is the same thickness as the CCI 400 which I use as my go to primer. So, If this is true they should be OK to use in a 223??????
What's your thoughts on this? I have a brick on the shelf drawing dust and if its safe they may get used up.

I got a really good deal on Rem 7 1/2's about three years ago so I bought a couple cases of them. Generally I pretty much use Fed M's and CCI BR's but in my 17 Hornet's I exclusively use those Rem 7 1/2's and they've served me well in those two or rifles. If you've got them to use I'd give em a go but it may not be a bad idea to reduce your load just a bit to start then work back up to whatever works best for you.

  • Remington does not recommend this primer for use in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington, 223 Remington, 204 Ruger, 17 Remington Fireball. Use the 7-1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest primer in these cartridges.
  • This 6-1/2 Small Rifle primer is primarily designed for use in the 22 Hornet.

Bolt face condition, cartridge/bolt face clearance(headspace) and firing pin clearance, combined with the load will determine whether your rifle can safely use a thinner cup primer. A bushed bolt with mid range powder charge and minimal headspace would be more tolerate of primer types/brands.

That's what they say. But I still may try them. They are supposed to have the same cup thickness as a CCI 400 SRP and that is what I use the most. If this is true, I don't really see an issue.......if its correct.

the 7½ is a fantastic small rifle magnum primer. its been shown to be one of the hottest SRM primers out there.

very good restults in everything ive tested it with and i find it to give very comparable results to a cci450 when run side by side.

Just because it's the same thickness as CCI 400 doesn't mean it's the same hardness. There's a really good chance the brass cup formulation is a little different. It
