Red dot for coyote ?

I sure appreciate all the responses !

I bought a Benelli M2…..I’ve not shot it yet but if it shoots to POI I wouldn’t consider a red dot at all.

I know that there are pros/cons to everything and I wanted to see what everyone’s experience was.

I have used shotguns for a wide variety of hunting. Most often I've used the bead and never needed anything more. But I found times, such as when you are back in the deep brush or at sundown, when the bead got hard to see. I upgraded to fiber optic sights but the shadows can make those hard to see. So I tried a red dot. It was a FastFire 2 and loved it. But I found in the harsh direct sun the red dot could get washed out. So I tried a Holisun green dot. It has a 30 moa ring with a dot in the middle and found it a great compromise. Works well in shadows or light and tge 30 moa ring is a perfect pattern aimpoint.

So I would say if you're thinking about it, don't break the bank, yet. Get something economical and try it. Then if you like it you'll be able to find one with the features you feel you need. If you don't like it, you can use on something else and use it to teach people who struggle with iron sights.

As an ex-competitive trap and international skeet shooter, and dabble in American skeet, sporting clays, helice/zz, gunner for spaniel hunt test and avid waterfowl/upland bird hunter. I know I can kill coyotes with just a bead but also know I can break clay and live birds with fringe hit, fringe hits are far less effective on coyotes thus a very wide FOV scope on my coyote shotguns.

Turkey tastes like turkey. Which is good. Coyotes taste like _ _ _ _ ! That's bad! :)

Good to see you posting again. Hope you are well.

A 12g w/red dot was amazingly effective when I was calling lots of foxes with a red spotlight. Maybe it's my style or the thick mountain terrain, but nearly all of my shots are on stationary predators, or moving towards me, not running (away?). For me, a short barrel and red dot work great!

Like on a pistol, you're supposed to look through the dot and focus on the target with both eyes open for unlimited field of view.

I've also seen plenty of Bob's daytime videos shooting running coyotes in wide open terrain. So I guess it just depends on your terrain and your hunting style.

Interesting thread : This is my old Benelli Mark 4 I have killed a couple of semi loads of pigs and predators with it Ghost ring peep, that I don't use I just point and shoot, I have shot 50 Coyotes a day out of a Chopper with this gun while doing pasture surveys, use what you like that works for you.

Keith Karr, Bought my old Benelli, used about 20 or so years ago from a friend, who retired as Prison Guard who didn't shoot it much but carried it every day at the Oklahoma State Prison in Lexington, Oklahoma, it's chambered for 2 3/4 and 3" 12 Ga. I have fired Hundreds of rounds thru it and it kills like lightening out to about 45-50 yards, Kicks like Hell with 3" so I only shoot 2 3/4' #4 Buck or #4 lead Duck loads, that a friend loads for me, not a legal bird load but works great for shooting Predators out of a Helicopter, This old shotgun could tell a lot of tales.
