Pointers for Coyote Hunting in AZ

I'm new to hunting in general; my cousin has been teaching me as much as he can; we've done some predator stands together but have not had any luck.

Any pointers on where to hunt, apps to use, calls to use, etc.

Any information would be gladly appreciated.

Arizona?

Walk 200+ yards from any road, sit where you can see your downwind, flip the safety off on your firearm, play anything that sounds like any animal being mildly inconvenienced, and get ready to shoot them in self defense as they come at you from different directions. Hunting coyotes in Arizona is like fishing in a barrel.

Looks like I need to take a trip to AZ.

The only thing that makes coyote hunting in new mexico or Arizona difficult is carrying enough ammo. I’ve called more coyotes than I've made stands out there. I come home to TN and can call for weeks sometimes without ever seeing a predator or hearing a howl.

I've killed a few AZ coyotes from Douglas to Kingman. Lots of pressure around Phoenix but the coyotes still come just need to work harder.

In Predator Hunting 101 a lot of Snowman's pictures and diagrams come from AZ.

Get some BLM Maps and OnX. Find some areas that have some cover. Not being able to see for a long ways weeds out a lot of predator hunters.

Give us an idea of where you want to hunt and maybe we can make some suggestions.

Coyotes are the most abundant predator to hunt in AZ. Bobcat and fox are commonly called in as well but I would focus mostly on coyotes to start with.

Some days coyotes seem easy to call and others, they keep you humble. I mostly hunt Southern NM but have also hunted coyotes in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. Sure you can get have a good day that you call in 10 coyotes in AZ but personally I would expect to average 2 or 3 in a day. I still have days that I'll make 5 or 6 stands and don't see a single coyote.

As AWS mentioned, check out Snowman's posts for some great information.

I've been using OnX for landownership for years and I'm happy with it. There are other apps and maps out there to help you find public land to hunt. Are you seeing coyote tracks in the areas you have tried calling? Looking for scat and tracks and listening for howls will give you a good idea of how many coyotes in the area. There are literally coyotes everywhere in Arizona but some areas will have higher densities than others. If you are hunting coyotes that have been educated by other hunters, they can be very difficult to kill.

I've called in coyotes with many different sounds. The exact call you use isn't near as important as the decisions you make before you start calling. Experts are good at selecting a good stand location and moving into that stand location with minimal risk of coyotes being alerted by hearing, smelling or seeing them. That stand location will also give you an advantage to shoot most coyotes before it sees or smells you.

What’s the best time of year to hunt coyotes in Arizona? I have relatives around Yuma and I’ve thought about making the trip. Thanks

When I was in Arizona and very close to San Carlos I hunted year round, dove, quail, coyote, fox, deer, javelina, elk, black bear, bobcat never saw a mountain lion although they were definitely there. I never felt like I was target deprived regardless of weather conditions. San Carlos terrain varies from desert to mountains so I just followed the regulations and it was, to me, a hunter's paradise. Wish I could have stayed there!

My favorite state to hunt :) There are plenty of coyotes but like others have said, it's not always easy but they are there! I always see the most when I'm hunting something else like I don't want to spook by shooting them of course LOL! I've also called in Lions - when the quota is already full naturally!!!!
