If I use a light when im trying to stay hidden I use a flashlight and I cup my hand around the front so the beam of light comes out more or less in a straight line pointed to the ground.
My biggest dark night scare was out in the middle of no where Wisconsin. My duddy who was a horrible shot(and had a bit of fear of the dark, probably from his horrible eyesight) wounded another buck archery hunting. We tracked it a long ways until we saw where it crossed a gavel road, we needed to let it sit so we walked the long ways back to the truck, drive to that gavel road and the plan was he was going to drop me off in the dark to track and finish his deer(like normal). Its dark and we we're supposed to be leaving WS that night so we're pushing it. Very dark night and my two lights were a super bright Olight I was trying not to use so I wasnt blinded and an 800 lumen TLR1HL Streamlight blinder on my handgun. I snuck in behind the buck and ended up pushing him further and shined the light on him as he was crossing a field. My ride was miles away loading up our gear so I sat in the dark a bit and I didnt use a light to walk out. Not far from the road suddenly a bush I was walking around erupted, too fast to crap your pants, a wounded doe was bedded there and had a wild stumble as it got up and tried to run right past me. I had the handgun and light on quick, I saw the big broadhead wound, i had never seen a deer look white in the face like this one did, we brought that one home instead.
