Navigating the woods at night?

I walked 10 ft from the blind to the atv with rifle in one hand, using a headlamp. Sneaky vine reached up and grabbed my foot. Used the weed whacker around the blind next time. Rattler was off about and inch @100, got corrected. Nothing broke fortunately.

Only one time I felt nervous walking without a light( in open ground). Montana breaks, knife edge ridge. Couldn't see the bottom on either side while walking the cow/game trail on top. Realized I left my light in the truck, was just a quick walk(1.5 miles in) to check a pond for elk sign. Used GPS screen to light up my feet, SLOWLY walked about 200 yards to get off that ridge(a short cut back to the truck). Did not want to break an ankle or worse, no cell coverage(no one knew where I was, was camping by myself).

Not exactly coyote related, but when I’m in mountainous terrain turkey hunting, I climb better in the dark with a dim red light. I’ll pick an elk trail and just follow it zigzagging up the mountain. I can go faster when I can’t see how far I have to go or see where I’d end up if I fall. During daylight I end up thinking I’ll never make it if I look up or psych myself out about falling if I look down, lol.

If I use a light when im trying to stay hidden I use a flashlight and I cup my hand around the front so the beam of light comes out more or less in a straight line pointed to the ground.

My biggest dark night scare was out in the middle of no where Wisconsin. My duddy who was a horrible shot(and had a bit of fear of the dark, probably from his horrible eyesight) wounded another buck archery hunting. We tracked it a long ways until we saw where it crossed a gavel road, we needed to let it sit so we walked the long ways back to the truck, drive to that gavel road and the plan was he was going to drop me off in the dark to track and finish his deer(like normal). Its dark and we we're supposed to be leaving WS that night so we're pushing it. Very dark night and my two lights were a super bright Olight I was trying not to use so I wasnt blinded and an 800 lumen TLR1HL Streamlight blinder on my handgun. I snuck in behind the buck and ended up pushing him further and shined the light on him as he was crossing a field. My ride was miles away loading up our gear so I sat in the dark a bit and I didnt use a light to walk out. Not far from the road suddenly a bush I was walking around erupted, too fast to crap your pants, a wounded doe was bedded there and had a wild stumble as it got up and tried to run right past me. I had the handgun and light on quick, I saw the big broadhead wound, i had never seen a deer look white in the face like this one did, we brought that one home instead.
