Sort-of a unique hunt for me here. Last week a co worker told me of some roadkill to get my bait fired up.
Fast forward 3 days and I had some wolves and coyotes on the bait.
After getting the kids dropped off at school I headed to the bait and as I snuck in I spotted a medium nice wolf on the bait and a coyote nearby. The wolf was chasing the yote off but he would hangout 30 yards away waiting.
I had my 223 CTR and 73gr factory ELD-M ammo. Bait pile at this spot is 340yd from my hide. When the wolf came to a stop at the bait I let him have it and at the shot he turned and headed towards me with a busted front shoulder. I hit him a couple more times before he went down and I noticed the coyote had run up to the bait to have a turn. A quick pivot on my tripod and I put him down also.
25lb female coyote and a 77lb young male wolf.
I haven't skinned the wolf yet to see where hes hit but I won't be taking the 223 to this bait again. Probably step up to 243. I was quite surprised the yote stuck around after the shooting but she must have been really hungry and happy to see the bigger dog leaving.
