Hunting over feeders

Here's my take...

You can say whatever you want, but at the end of the day the reason you are hunting that white oak that's dropping, that water hole, that feeder, etc is to increase your odds. You can argue there is a difference, but the end result isn't.

If you want to be the ultimate great white hunter you should be out stalking deer in buck skin panties with a home made spear. But then, you will have TomTom saying that he's better than you because he uses rocks.

As longs it's legal, don't worry about what the next guy is doing. Do you, enjoy, be happy for the next person.

Another one that is nuts is how people argue that baiting ducks is different than planting corn just for ducks then flooding it.

I was just curious as to the way people think about hunting over feeders. Like others, do what you gotta do. We had a ranger talk at our monthly club meeting and he told us of the dangers of corn feeders on turkeys as well as other wildlife. That is one of many reasons I don't use feeders also. Fermented corn kills turkeys and other birds and can make deer sick. Like I said that's one of my reasons, doesn't have to be one of yours. Fill the freezers, enjoy the outdoors, teach our sport to the young. That's what matters most.

Baiting has never NOT been allowed in SC and we had so many turkeys that they used to use ours to restock populations in other states. “They” have started saying the same thing about corn here too, but refuse to say anything about the entire state’s mass crop trees being replaced with a monoculture of loblolly for the timber industry.

I’m out shopping with the gf, but I’d love to comment in this more when I sit down later.

Deer hunting has changed a lot. When I was a kid we would hunt dusk and dawn, mid-day we would fan out and walk the sandhills hills kicking up bedded deer, kinda like mini deer drives working our way into the wind. You would crest the hill expecting to kick up deer in the low spots, bedded in the thickets. It was not the most ethical method, shooting at the ass end of running deer. In my teens it got western. I would drink Jim Beam 7 year old at deer camp, wake up puking and then go climb a tree hung over, wanting to shoot something just to get down. My cousins from Texas would come down and hunt, I remember one morning them saying, “sounded like we were in the Gaza Strip” lol.

Those were the days of “Buck Fever”. I was shooting deer out of cottonwood trees before I was big enough to shoulder the rifle. People talk about getting scope kissed above the eye, I remember shooting deer, and then blood on my face from the hammer of this single shot 30-30.

Some of my earliest memories are of my dad carrying me across the icy river and lifting me up into trees. We kept the freezer full and I had a blast.
