Help me learn from my first attempted coyote hunt!

one night we got a one lone howl response. we called a few more times then went silent too. 65 minutes of silence later we had 3 coyotes walk out into the field...all 3 died.
Wait, what? You sat there for over an hour without calling and no action? That was the plan? At what point would you have decided to leave?
I'm not going to suggest that you're doing it wrong, as I know a lot of different tactics can work, but at that point it seems possible that the 3 that came into the field could have been coincidental.

could have been. when they respond and go silent, we still call and see what happens. other times we go silent too, and see what happens. they know where you are calling from. if they want to find you they will.

also if they go silent we dont usually wait more than 45 minutes or so but this time we waited awhile, nothing else to do.

I can say, that I'm very, very familiar with the west desert area. Very. And I haven't bothered to day time call out there in a lot of years. Although I still get out there often, doing other things. And was getting out there for some night calling on occasion a few years ago. The night calling was just okay. The day calling has just mostly sucked pretty bad out there for decades now. Don't get me wrong, you can always come upon a few sets of fresh ears and have a good morning or a good day or even a good weekend. But that would be the exception to the rule.

What you experienced. Yappers. Is the rule out there, not the exception.

I call quite a bit differently than you describe. But who is to say my way is any better. I get the volume up quite a bit higher, quickly, and let it run continuously. I turn the volume down towards the end of the stand, not the beginning. That's just me. This time of year I don't bother with vocals much, except for locating. Most coyotes aren't and aren't ever going to be territorial. Moving on yappers can be quite productive, I think that was a good play. It just didn't pan out that time. The way it goes.

Silence at the end of sets has killed many a coyote back here in the East. Over an hour is extreme but I have done it and 1/4 to 1/2 hr is my norm if they have responded within a reasonable distance.

Wind from the East? Coyotes come the least!
When you have to pick the sun versus the wind? Always take the wind (in your face)

What was the weather temperature?

I hunted last Saturday, nearly 60 degrees, i know there are coyotes there, they don’t commit!

Last stand of the day and I spot a coyote at 300 yards, I am going to shoot it, it drops out of sight, I glass, catch it again at 451 yards. It lays down!!

I would have shot it, but by the grace of God for it, 3 major power lines were in my scope vision and I was NOT going to chance it for the life of me on a ZERO $$ Coyote.

I can tell you out of the 88 Coyotes my partner and I have kill beginning October 18th, very few died because they came into rabbit, bird, prairie dog or other dying critter sounds. Most died with some type of Pup distress or Coyote/pup fight.

We did get to watch a pair of nesting Bald Eagles for awhile on this stand;-)

You too on the east wind? I live in an area where it’s predominantly a north west wind and I get hosed every time I have an east or south wind. Idk why I keep trying though.

Was wondering if anyone would mention pup distress. I end most stands w/pup distress followed by a few minutes of silence before breaking it down.

I personally like hunting new ground, one of the great things about the PM Conventions was hunting/calling my way there and back, plus it was held in different places. When it was in NM I hunted my way from WA to NM, liked the country I moved there and then had to hunt my way north to Elko NV.

Keep it simple, have everything handy, my caller hangs on the front of my shoulder strap so I can walk in and place the caller, my decoy doubles as a walking stick so everything is set to go no unloading and setting up. My rifle, seat and sticks are on my back so I get to where I'm going to sit there are no zippers or Velcro to mess with. I don't concern myself with hiding too much, a backing bush to sit in front of, a yucca or cactus even a power pole or fence corner posts work. I like to set up my stand so I'm not in the coyotes line of sight and stay still. I don't mess with scope, scan with binoculars, my remote is Velcro to my thigh so it doesn't slide off and it takes minimal movement to make changes. I try to only slowly rotate my head to scan for incomers trying not to swivel my whole body. I like remotes that I can run without looking down at them. I rarely change sounds just volume.
