Help me choose! Nightforce or Trijicon

I need help picking scopes. I am very guilty of putting to much power on top of my rifles. I have a new (to me) D-tech in 17 Rem that is to be a calling rifle. Until yesterday I was going to put a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 with the high velocity reticle on it. Then I looked at something for the first time that I had not seen before or considered. When I was doing my paperwork at the gunstore a counter guy handed me an 18" Rock River with a 1-4 power Trijicon Accupoint on it. I really liked it! It had the reticle with the post and an illuminated green chevron on top. Now I can't make up my mind! Tell me why you would pick the Nightforce or the Accupoint. Thanks Chris

Chris,

All NightForce have lighted reticles, so that's a great plus.

Just in terms of what defines supreme optics, NightForce & Trijcon are not on an even playing field.

If you have the resources, you would never go wrong with NightForce. A better scope can't be had at any price.

I am also on the Nightforce fence but not for a calling rifle - thinking of one for a varmint rig. The Trijicon can also be had in a 3x9 and would be my choice for a calling rifle scope. Should be a very quick reticle for getting on a dog. I really like the green chevron and with the 3x9 you have power options over the military style scopes.

I agree with most of that, Ken.

BUT, check out this scope:

http://nightforceoptics.com/nightforcescopes/SCOPES_OVERVIEW/3_5-15x50_F1/3_5-15x50_f1.html

The thing about this scope is that it's a "focal plane" reticle. It's 3.5-15 maginification, and when you are calling with 6 power or so, the reticle is very bold, and you can even turn the light on with NightForce scopes, so that makes it a red color.

The reason I mention this is that I call with a scope simlar to this. You just can't believe how good a Mil Dot reticle works on a calling scope with all situations, and especially the running coyotes. I hesitate to even mention what my percentage is on running coyotes since I started using a scope like this. It's scary.

I didn't even add a scope like this to my calling rifle for that purpose...I just discovered it was helping my running percentage VERY much after I started calling with it....Now, that's a great surprize!

But, now that I found it out, I wouldn't change for any reason.

Thanks you guys. I have a Nightforce 8-32 NXS on a 6BR that I really like. I rarely hunt with it due to the fact I can only turn it down to 8X. It is scary accurate and fun to shoot, just not real practical for calling. It likes woodchucks, and it is going to shoot prairie dogs in June. I was pretty well set on the compact Nightforce for this gun, until I happened to look through the Trijicon yesterday. Before I looked at the Trijicon I spent the whole day chasing coyotes with hounds for the first time. Needless to say every coyote that I saw was moving fast. I had a difficult time getting them in the scope, and didn't hit any. That Trijicon seemed well suited for that type of hunting. And I did get invited back! I guess I will have to think on it for a few days. I agree with you Barry, it isn't a fair overall comparison between Trijicon and Nightforce, but specifically for running coyotes maybe it is. Thanks Chris

Chris, I think a lot of it depends on the type of terain your normally hunting.
I just put a Trijicon ACOG 4x on my primary calling rifle and love it. They are as tuff as nails and one of the reasons the military issues them to our troops.
It will shoot about 1 to 1 1/2inch groups at 100 yards and it works great on running animals as well. I also have a D-Tech 204 with a 4x14x50 Ziess scope on it. The bigger\heavier Ziess is great for long range shooting but I was after the lightest, fast handling set up on this rifle and the ACOG is really working out.
Just something else to think about.
Ken

I looked at the NF link rockinbbar posted and surely agree that would be a great calling scope. But I consider NF to be at the top of the $$$$ bar and seriously wonder if a NF would best be served on a calling gun that would never put a NF through the accuracy it is capable of providing. So I am wondering if a lesser priced high quality scope (Trijicon was mentioned) would be more beneficial in that respect? That green chevron would be the ticket chasing a coyote across a field...

I do not have any experience with any of the Nightforce scopes, but I have a Trijicon Accupoint 2.5x10 56mm obj. with the amber triangle on my Armalite AR and I absolutely love it! The light gathering capability and BAC reticle make night hunting and running shots much easier. The only downside is shooting at over 300 yards, but I rarely shoot that far where I hunt.

I am still undecided. I am actually leaning towards the 1-4 power Trijicon. Mainly because I have other rifles/optics for long range. I guess if I can't decide I should just get rid of the rifle! Chris

Barry, more specifics please. What exactly are you using?

After much debate, I went with the Nightforce 2.5-10x32 with the high velocity reticle (Larue mount). Out of the 3 types of hunting I want to use this rifle for this scope is ideal for 2 of the 3. The Trijicon would have been ideal for only 1 of the 3. I have a D-tech on order in 20 Tactical, that could end up with a Trijicon. With the Larue mount I think I could have only one gun, and several scopes, don't tell my wife! Thanks everyone!

I just don't think you could go wrong with that!

Congratulations!

I have a 3 power Acog and I can hit much smaller than coyote targets at 300 and more with ease with my AR -I love to be able to take more than 1 shot at a dog (still or running) My last scope weighed in at 2.5 lb.s - I hunt the foothills of Appalacian Mt.s and the weight reduction is huge to me.

Good choice! I recently bought a Nightforce 3.5x15x56 NP-R2 and put it on my Olympic Arms 22-250 and love it! I hunt at night some and the red reticle over powers my red led kill light on a target. Awesome scopes!

Great choice! I have the same scope in a larue mount on my specialized dynamics AR in 17 REM.
