Got one for the taxi

How common are black yotes down there in SC would you say?

From what I have gathered by reading a few studies/articles is that black coyotes are more common in Arkansas, South Carolina, and North Carolina for whatever reason. They have been tested numerous times and they are coyotes, not coydogs. It also seems that they are in pockets of the states where they are found. For example, I know a guy that hunts a few counties over and kills 100+ coyotes a year which is a LOT for South Carolina and I don't think I've ever seen or heard him say anything about killing a black one. Where I have called in four in the past 3-4 years. Most of them look like the wolves that you posted above, but every now and then you will see a really shiny black one like the one I got. The best one I and most people have ever seen is one that I called up and shot (unfortunately didn't recover) a few years back. He was truly what I would consider a once in a life time coyote. I have posted the pic of him on here before, but I will try to dig it up and repost it so you can see it.

They can also be travelers. There was recently a black one killed in the Lumberton area of NC that was caught and tagged 100 miles away in South Carolina the year before.

I guess the best answer I can give is that a "regular" black one is uncommon, but not what I could call rare. A shiny black one is rare instead of uncommon.

That is a real beauty. Im jealous.
This is the one that I shot and couldn't find a few years ago. There were three of them so I'm guess litter mates. I called in this one and another one that wasn't quite as dark and shot this one.

My first ever called coyote was a beautiful black one that I literally got within 10-12 yards of me. Problem is he was on my right and my rifle was pointed to my left. He finally saw me and in the twinkling of an eye was gone over the hill before I could say “don’t.” I have been hyperventilating ever since, and have never seen another black one ( except one time on a trail camera ).

The only black ones I have called in have been labradors. I learned not to play baybee cottontail anymore within a mile of a farm

That's about as pretty a pelt as you will ever see IMO. CONGRATS on the black one, something I have been after for a while but not connected, YET!
