I started off last night by going to a very promising spot that I scouted Friday evening. Fresh tracks, scat, etc. I drew a blank and didn't even hear any in the distance. I have another tract of property not far from this one so I decided to try it since I was so close. I got a coyote off of it last year and so far this year I've called in two cats. The property is a thick and wet pine plantation with a few roads through it. I pulled off of the highway and drove about 20 yards down the main road through the pines then walked about another 20. I do this to stay close enough to the highway that the coyotes won't try to circle me. About five minutes into a rabbit sound, can't remember if it was Cagie or Mrs. I picked up two coyotes in my scanner. They were coming straight down the road so I went ahead and turned on my light. As soon as I turned on the light they seen it and stopped. I could immediately tell that they were black, but wasn't 100% sure if they were coyotes because of the white spots on their chests. They started walking in circles in the middle of the road and then I could tell that they were coyotes. I started fumbling with my video trying to turn it on. For some reason I couldn't get it to come on. They just walked back and forth for a good 15 seconds before one of them decided to step into the woods. Just then I noticed that the video was on and I got just a quick shot as the other turned. Ended up being a shorter, but fat male. It's a bummer that I didn't get both of them on camera, it would have made for some good viewing. Didn't weigh him or get any hero shots because I was trying to make it to the taxidermist before he went to bed. I think I'm going to go with a half wall mount with some logs. Also, another bang-flop for the 6mm arc.
