Enticement

Years ago it was common to see coyotes chasing mullett in the bay off S. Padre Island. They don't mind the water.

According to the “facts” here we need to be importing and protecting coyotes, lol.

At one point in my life I started thinking if I was actually causing harm to the environment by trapping/hunting predators. It wasn’t until I met a landowner wanting some serious help that changed my mind. He had thought that all wildlife could lead a balanced life together provided the habitat was optimal. He had quit taking predators and even supplemental feeding wildlife. Initial early results showed promise, but years 3-5 showed a serious decline in prey and game populations. His “utopia” had turned into an explosion of predators. Now maybe if he’d let it go full circle for several more years it “might” have balanced out, but he decided to bring in help in removing the predators again. When you go from seeing flocks of turkeys and fawns every Spring to nothing but coyotes, fox, and cats, he realized what he’d done.
It took several years, but he’s back to flocks of turkeys and fawns on camera again. They aren’t quite where they used to be, but he can now shoot a deer and find it whole, lol.
It’s places like his that makes one think they’re a professional trapper the first couple of years I trapped his place, lol. We’re even planning on doing some thermal hunting on his place after deer season this January.
