doberman for decoy dog use and training tips

Hello I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I was wondering anyone on this site has had any kind of experience with decoy dogs or coyote hunting knowledge. Also I would be very thankful if you leave out fictional miths such as a single coyote will destroy any dog. That is simply b.s. for a border colie sized candid. Any way I've taken my male doberman in search of coyotes didn't have much luck due to my poor hand calling. My doberman is under a year old 80 pounds has been beeper collar trained superb off leash and recall and very high pray drive and good overall obedience I have done a lot of research and other hunters say he is just to big and will intimidate most coyote to lure them in close for a shot please at least research before debates

I used to have a 90 lb. Weimaraner, and he didn't intimidate coyotes. I think as soon as they realize that the dog can't catch them, they get cocky. In this case, if he had caught one, it would have been over for the coyote. He found a crippled one one time, and picked it right up, and shook it like a rat! It was pretty weak, though.

It probably depends on the coyote, too. Younger, more submissive animals would likely react differently than adults.

I say try him.

From your post, it sounds like you already know everything. Where you looking for validation?

Just go out and hunt him, you won't know if it works if you don't try. Just rember, coyotes are like buzz saws with legs, and you won't know how your dog will react if he starts taking some heat. I've seen some mild mannered dogs turn into firebreathing Dragons when threatened, I've also seen some dogs that I thought would really stand their ground, run like school girls for the truck the first time they get nipped in the butt.

Well I've done plenty of research. Many sleepless nights reading and watching videos. But I've never heard of a doberman doing decoy work and I've only brought my dog once I would love to hear any training tips for a youngster dog like mine in field or at home that I can incorporate into what I already know

Welcome to the forum, Jesse. You might want to go to the Lions, Bears & Houndsmen section to ask you questions. Look in the archives (search) and you will find a lot of information. Good luck.

Are you going to hunt in the summer? If so, no dog is too big.

Are you going to hunt in the winter? If so, every dog is too big

What about mating season witch is about to start I would think it would get crazy using challenge calls and a dog being on site

Mating season is a valid question to which I have no answer. I have never tried it. I put my dogs up for the most part the 2nd or 3rd week of October. My gut tells me it won't make any difference and they will still shy away from the dogs. Us decoy dog guys sometimes want to dream up ways to extend our seasons but it just ain't there. That is not to say you can't find a few coyotes that will work all year round. The worst I ever had a dog eat up was November 19th. That is not the norm though.

Well I guess I'll give it a shot any way since I'm going next month I'm also wondering if female coyotes in heat will drive me down to disobey command since both me and him our both inexperienced I can see why a large breed female would be better this time of year

If you are there to breakup the fight, almost any dog (within reason) can be made to decoy, but left alone with two mature coyotes that survive by killing can take almost any dog if they want too.

I tried with our pit. She was obedient trained and collar trained. I took her out sept time frame she was about 15 months old. We had several dry stands till late one evening right before dark I called and had a coyote come out of the trees my pit saw her and went right at her when the coyote turned to run I toned her back. She turned and came back and the coyote went into full predator mode well my pit was lazily coming back and the coyote nipped her hind end well my pit went physco about 30 yds later caught the coyote about 20 second fight and the coyotes was shredded I was toning her shocking her and the second I let up on the burn button she would grab up the coyote and shake it like a rag doll till I got to her and pulled her off. Now anytime I bring home a coyote hide she thinks it's go time and gets all fired up.

Did I do it right I mean I could have shot the coyote earlier and see how she reacted. I don't know but I do know she gets ahold a coyote and there won't be any reason to skin it left.

I say try it u never know. I just wanted to let you know how my mild mannered pit turned into a coyote blood thirsty beast instantly. She is still the same dog as before we hunted I just don't take her now...
