I don't have a pic of it and never did call it in, but last year I was hunting a VERY VERY red coyote. The land owner showed me trail cam pics of it, but never could call it in.

Had one that had some deep red years ago. At first I thought it was a red fox, but when I didn't see any black socks, I drilled her. Have to find the pelt for pics.

The “Black Coyote” thread got me thinking, and I’m wondering what other color phases some of you guys have taken? I personally have taken about every shade of your basic brownish, grayish regular old color coyote. I’ve taken one blonde coyote. Sadly it isn’t the best pic in the world

Years ago I had 2 encounters with the prettiest red phase coyote ever! Unfortunately both times I was bowhunting and no shot opportunity presented itself. The thing looked like a big Red fox. And a bright red fox, not the pale rusty red. Never saw it while calling. Haunts me to this day! Lol.

I’d love to see some pics of your not so ordinary coyotes.
Most coyotes I've seen were the typical greyish colored ones. My memory is not what it once was. But if I recall correctly, I've seen 6 or 7 black coyotes. Two of those being jet black. The others were a dusky black. All of then had a white underside. I've seen a very large solid brown(coco color) coyote. A solid yellow & a solid red. One coyote which I believe was a hybrid, was solid gold. It had a very stock build with a large shoulder mass. It had a wide broad head, short broad muzzle & little tiny pointed (arrow head) looking ears. I also seen a very large dark rusty/brown colored coyote. That coyote was a 1/3 larger(estimated) than most coyotes I've seen. It's paw print on firm snow was 4" long.

The muzzle was very dark with a blue hue to it's color. It had an off white facial band. The demarcation line between it's muzzle & off white face. Had a very thin blue line of fur. Separating the dark muzzle from the off white face.

I live in the northeast. New York to be specific. Coyote colors can be quite diverse. I haven’t ever seen one here that had those very doglike facial and body pattern markings. Nor have I ever seen a jet black one. They exist though, as evidenced by the numerous pictures posted frequently. I have however seen a lot of the common variations of blond, red, brown, and basic grey and tawny brown which is most common.

Where the crazy colors and patterns come from in my opinion is probably from some dog cross from who knows when that somehow pops up genetically every so often. It’s just my belief, with no real way to prove it. Others have their beliefs, and that’s 100% fine with me. It just isn’t anything that is worth the energy to debate.

What is the end result anyway? That one person argued their point longer than the other? It’s hard to fathom being so hung up on being the winner of such a trivial point. To keep posting on pretty much the same topic to illicit further banter is also hard for me to wrap my head around.

I have to admit, this subject has been funny at times, or downright insulting at other times. Either way, that comes at the expense of someone’s beliefs. Seems crazy to me, but carry on!

Your beliefs are much like mine. I hunt north central region. In my state for many decades. There have been quite a few wolf/dog, coyote/dog breeders. Who sold those resulting litters on the open market. It is also my belief. Some of those hybrids either escaped or were turned loose into the country side. Which resulted in those hybrids mating with the coyotes. Some hunter will never believe. I could care less if/when they do. They are just ignorant & closed minded. To the varied truths in nature. I also believe the color blue. Does not occur in a purebred coyote.

I’ve never shot a dog or a wolf. Don’t recall seeing wolves with the crazy doglike appearance with little brown eyebrow markings or blotchy hair patterns. Admittedly, I haven’t really ever researched it, so there may be crazy patterns in the wolf lines. Again, don’t care enough to make the subject a top priority.

We get a pretty good variety of fur here. Partner shot the jet black one(just one of 3 he's shot)
Those tan/white ones where from the same area...same family group of yoy 5.
We might kill 20 or so that are a unique color variation.
