This season has been horribly slow for hunting here in Washington. We have had more days of rain in December than we have days without, and it has really put a damper on the hunting. The few times I have been out the hunting has been slow. The coyotes have been quiet and unwilling to cooperate as a whole.

This morning, I was able to get out and had quite the day. I was blanked on my first 4 stands of the day which had me at 2 successful stands out of 35 since November.. That is exceptionally slow hunting for me and had me feeling like I may be forgot how to do this thing we call coyote hunting. I start saying I'm going to take my rifle for a walk when things get that slow.

My fifth stand of the morning is where things turned around. I got set up overlooking a large grass flat. I started out with a couple howls from the diaphragm call I use. I was answered quickly from both my hard left and also straight out front. I let out a couple more howls and the coyote out front started to challenge me from about 600 yards where I spotted him. He started to make his way to my left which was toward my downwind side and where the other coyote had howled from. After a couple minutes I spot a coyote at my 10 o'clock and about 140 yards out. I switched the e call to mouse squeaks to try to get her to finish the distance, but she was staring out to her left and out in front of me.

I had a feeling she was watching another coyote coming in and sure enough another popped up to my 1oclock at 100 yards. I moved over to get on it and settle the crosshairs and let a round fly. The coyote went down with a poof of hair. I swung back over to the other coyote that had not moved, and I settled in on it and put her down as well.

The next stand I started out with the same call sequence and after 10 minutes had lapsed, I switched to a fight sound. I soon spotted a coyote to my 9 o'clock at 100 yards and straight down wind. I got swung over to it and shot him where he stood on the edge of the hill.

The next stand I had a hard charger come in and busted me. I sent a couple hail marys at him after he wouldn't stop but it was all misses.

The next stand I got set up on a big valley that is full of knee high grass. My howls were once again met with a respomse from my 3 oclock and also straight down wind. About 5 minutes later I spot 3 coyotes on the crest of the hill making their way to me. one was leading the others by a little bit and got to 125 yards. I decided since they were straight down wind, i was not gonna get a better opportunity and I put the lead coyote down. The other 2 took off and were back over the hill before I could get a shot at them.

I finished the day out with 2 blank stands and decided to head home around 2. I had had enough fun for the day and went home with a smile on my face.

Funny how those dry spells come around once in a while but when you broke it you really broke it. Congratulations on a great day.
