Canadian Geese Nesting in a Tree

I've never heard of Canadian Geese nesting in trees or even sitting on a branch of a tree. I was up at the Maumee River (Maumee, Ohio), this past Thursday and noticed a nesting pair of Canadian Geese that were nesting in a double trunk of a Cottonwood, that was busted off on one side. There's no way those goslings are going to live in that tree until they get their feathers to fly out, like Wood Duck ducklings do. There over the land near the bank and have a solid 50 feet to drop to the ground. Weird!

That's odd, gotta wonder if that pair may have had trouble w/predators and ground nests in past years, or maybe they are just identifying as woodpeckers?? Cool pictures, thanks for posting.

We have them nesting in dirt cliffs in cracks and holes 50' high along the Missouri River in MT. When the goslings are ready to leave they jump.
