Bolt gun build - share yours

.223/556 just doesn't do it for me anymore, .243 is my go two from mild to wild, however, I'm currently building a 22 Creedmoor to see if it can unseat my go to.

Forgot to mention:

My favorite of the four 243's (all weather build) is a Trued SS 700 action with Jeweled bolt and installed a 20" threaded CBI 10 T SS light varmint contour barrel, Trigger Tech Trigger, in a magpul hunter stock using a 30 cal Ti can. I'm currently pushing a 75gr V-Max handload at 3300 plus and with a scope height of 2.5", I use a 75 yard zero.

As for something different:

There's a river that runs through the outside edge of town that raccoons, coyotes and hogs, etc. like to travel and a lot of houses nearby. Anyway, the owner of a cow pasture and a local feed barn gave me written permission to hunt there as long as I use subsonic rounds and/or a bow due to nearby houses.

The bolt gun I use is a Ruger American Ranch w/16" barrel chambered in 450 BM, Bushwhacker 46 suppressor, and Wraith mini thermal. Just finished working up some 395gr Sub-X handloads and hoping to get first blood next week.

I cast my own 300 gr hardcast/powder coated bullets to use in thick brush for hogs. Nothing fancy. but then again it's a tool that I plan on using the crap out of without worrying about looking pretty.

I put on a new 26" MTU 10 twist, chambered in 22-250 on my 700 rem. The old barrel was toast and so far I am very happy with it.

One of my day rifles. Rem 700 22-250 Lilja 1/12 twist 21.75 5/8-24 thread. Axiom stock, Talley LW rings and Sightron 4-20 duplex s-tac. Harvester can. Timmney trigger. Gre Tan firing pin/spring. I shot it once in a local contest. One shot per target for score. 9 shots. 10 ring 1/2 inch dia inner ring 3/8 inch(X) touch a line is LOWER value. Score 90, 7X. Used Nosler factory 55gr BT ammo. 2 shooters had more X's. Shooting full bench rest rifles. They were amazed I was shooting factory ammo.

I didn't build it but bought it from my friend who did, Defiance action, carbon wrapped Rock barrel, Trigger Tech trigger in an AG stock in 308 Winchester, with a NightForce NX-8 scope. Sorry I don't do pictures or I'd post one.

I have a gunsmith that I have keep an eye out for other people drop off parts. I have a couple "mostly" custom rifles for a fraction of the cost if you aren't in a hurry and willing to wait. Here are the two I have:

280AI built from a 30-06 Savage Axis. Savage Axis stock sent in to Bell&Carlson to have refinished, Savage action, drop-off ER Shaw barrel that we re-chambered (originally a 7mm08) and pillar bedded it and changed to a Timney trigger.

264 win mag built from a Remington 700 308. Used the Remington 700 action, Iota Kremlin stock, Douglas air gage premium barrel re-chambered.

I would advise what ever your choice, make sure there are prefit barrels available. I know some are not a “ nut job” fan, many have been humbled by them.
I have several short action savage rifles, no axis stuff because of support. Have several custom rigs also, Remington foot print for sure.
$800 should be doable if your not in a hurry and shop several classifieds and GB.

If you’re in Kansas I have a Savage that needs a new home. 223 bolt face but is easily changed.

I've got two that actually amount to not much more than barrel swaps. had a 25-06 Rem 700 BDL and swapped out the barrel for a Shilen in 6.5x06. had the chamber cut to allow me to seat a 140gr bullet to the junction of the neck and shoulder. Got it back and completely re-bedded it and put on a one piece Redfield scope base. Rifle shoot's great. The other is a Rem 700 ADL that was a 243. Wanted a 250-3000 but to much trouble finding case's or what to make the from so ended up with a 260 Rem. 700 came with a plastic stock, gift! I hate plastic stocks. Had a Lilja barrel put on it then got it back and found a used 700 ADL wood stock and put it on completely bedding it. Shoot's every bit as well and the 6.5! Thing about those two 6.5's, the smith that did the 6.5x06 retired and his son took over. His son did the 260 Rem. About as close as I'll ever get to affording a custom myself. I do have one I inherited years ago. 1903 Springfield done by Paul Jaeger in 1945. beautiful thing and shoot very well I asked the guy I got it from if it was accurate and he told me it would drive nails if I could hit them! About right! Love the thing! Guy I got it from paid $500 for it right from Jaeger. Had it appraised in 1992 and appraised at $7500! I wouldn't take three times that for it!

I know this is not what you're looking for, but here's a peek at how it was done "back in the day" ;). Start with a Mod. 98 Mauser rifle:

Add a slab of walnut and a barrel blank of your choice and a few hours........

:)

I've found an old Brazilian Mauser chambered in a 22-250 that's taken my eye. Do know of anyone making bottom metal with detachable magazines for the Mauser's?

Howa 1500 action Trued to a proof research barrel mdt chassis, trigger tech diamond trigger in 22nos
Terminus Apollo action with proof research 243, trigger tech trigger, mdt hnt 26 chassis
